Things to do When You’re Sad in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Lax chapter.

We’ve all been there. We’ve all had days when we feel like nothing will make us feel better. It might be because of a bad test score, relationship/friendship struggles, or homesickness. But whatever the case might be, things will get better. It’s so easy to feel lonely while getting caught up in all the stress when you’re at college. It’s also easy to feel like you are stuck and to feel like you are always going to be sad and it’s never going to get better. But I promise things will start looking up for you really soon. Here are somethings to do when you’re not having such a good day in college:

1. First off, remind your self that it’s just a bad day, not a bad life. Happiness is going to come and ago. You are not going to be happy 24/7. Happiness is just an emotion, just like sadness is. There’s nothing wrong with feeling sad sometimes, but just remind yourself that things you are sad about now most likely won’t matter in a year or shorter.

2. Realize that you can learn a lot by facing struggles and bumps in the road. I mean how boring would life be if it was easy? Just remember that every struggle you are going through will teach you something.

3. Sometimes you just need some good old-fashioned movie and ice cream night. Ice cream really is a form of therapy and can really help you feel better when you’re sad.

4. Call your best friend or your parents. The people you are closest to always have a way of making you feel better.

5. Go do something that you love to do. If you like to read, go read. If you like to watch netflix, watch some netflix.

6. Do some exersize. It’s been proved that doing exersize does wonders for your mental health. Running is always my go-to when I need a little pick-me-up. Nothing makes me feel better than a long run.

7. Sleep! Sometimes all you need is some sleep to cure your sadness.

8. Take a Shower…and let out some tears if you need to. I don’t know what it is about showering, but it always has a way of making you feel better.

9. Meditate. Sometimes even something as simple as just closing your eyes and taking deep breaths can you help you relax.

10. Realize how lucky you are. Yeah, you might be sad now but there are so many things in life to be happy and thankful about. Focus on the good.

11. “I’m beginning to recognize that real happiness isn’t something larger and looming on the horizon ahead but something small, numerous and already here. The smile of someone you love. A decent breakfast. The warm sunset. Your little everyday joys all lined up in a row.” -Beau Taplin

Don’t worry, be happy! If you really feel like your feeling of sadness is eating you away and you don’t know what to do, realize that there are people here on campus that would love to help you!
