5 Brain Foods to Boost Focus and Memory

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

It’s the point of the semester when professors start handing out tests and unfortunately; it’s the point when most students find themselves struggling to focus. If you’re finding it hard to study and need a pick-me-up to boost your focus and memory try out these five brain foods!

Blueberries

Also referred to as brainberries, this small fruit is packed with a powerful punch. They are one of the most antioxidant rich foods known to man. High in gallic acid, they protect the brain from degeneration and stress.

Avocados

This powerful food has the highest protein and lowest sugar content of any fruit. Yes, I said fruit! Although the avocado has a high fat content, it is monounsaturated. This makes it a healthy fat that promotes glowing skin and steady blood sugar levels. Avocados contain Vitamin K and folate, which help prevent blood clots in the brain and improve cognitive function including memory and concentration.

Broccoli

This vegetable contains high levels of Vitamin K and choline, which helps to keep memory sharp. High levels of Vitamin C can be found in broccoli, as well as large amounts of fiber to keep you full.

Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate contains flavonols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They can help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the brain and heart. The darker the chocolate, the more health benefits – try to make it at least 70 percent cocoa!

Walnuts

Nuts, particularly walnuts, contain high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that improve mental alertness. It is also possible that the Vitamin E in nuts can help prevent cognitive decline and decrease likeliness of Alzheimer’s.

Snacking and studying are two things that inevitably go together, so snack on one or all of these five foods to help you feel focused and ready for that test!
