Bringing Your Independence Home For Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

It’s finals week here at UW-Stout, which means stressing your brains out and longing for Friday to come more than ever.  We’ve worked hard to bust out more assignments than we can count, toiled away at cramming 500 pages of information into our heads for each final and we couldn’t be happier to tell you that the end is near!

As much as you might be looking forward to sleeping in on weekdays and not spending your nights on hours of homework, if you’re anything like me, you might be dreading the lack of independence that comes with living under your parents’ roof again.  It’s hard to return to curfews and “Because-I-Said-So ‘s” when you’ve had months to relish in the sweet taste of freedom.

But instead of grumbling away your winter break, it’s important to appreciate the good things that come with being home. In case the winter blues have made you forget, we’ve compiled a list of things for you to enjoy while at home!

1. Home-Cooked Meals.

Whether you live in the dorms or not, you have to admit the taste of independent living isn’t always the sweetest.  Take advantage of your time at home to scarf down some homemade food you don’t have to pay for.  It may have been something you took for granted in high school, but you’ve certainly learned to appreciate it after months of granola bars and Ramen.

2. Free Parking.

I know it may be hard to remember a time when parking didn’t cost your right kidney, but breathe easy, friends: that slab of concrete we call a driveway is calling your name.  Above all, you don’t have to walk a mile to retrieve your car from the Fieldhouse parking lot, or worry about the next tire slashing attack.

3. Privacy.

What’s that sound?  I think they call it silence.  We’ve gotten too used to hearing every burp and sneeze through the paper thin walls of the dorms.  Give your eardrums adequate time to recover from the sub-woofers in the neighboring room, and enjoy the comfort of having your own space again.

4. Catching Up With High School Friends.

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to my friendly reunion.  Something about catching friends up on the newest college drama over a game of Cards Against Humanity just seems oh-so-sweet.
