Freshman year was fantastic…the lighter course load, excitement of having a cool new room (even if it was shared with one other person), new friends, and the motivation to dress up for class. Yes, my freshman year was filled with a lot of hope and ambition. I woke up early to straighten my hair and was constantly styling new outfits. And now here I am…less than three weeks away from graduation and relying on my usual rotation of outfits.

Over the course of our college careers we experience a great deal of fluctuation with our styles. To illustrate these changes, here is a year-by-year evolution of our styles (or, as I like to call it, The Decline).

Freshman Year: For the majority of us, we moved to a new city or town and are excited to make the most of this fresh start. Translation: waking up early to dress up, desperately trying not to be an outfit repeater, probably wears jeans or dresses and tights every day.

Sophomore Year: The excitement and novelty of freshman year has worn off. Subsequently, so has some of our effort. Translation: slowly incorporates leggings into wardrobe, starts to lose touch with fashion trends.

Junior Year: No, we have not graduated yet. But we’re only, what, less than two years away from that, so let’s enjoy our time of wearing comfortable clothes. Translation: wears articles of clothing more than once a week, throws away hair straightener and effort in the transition from sophomore to junior year.

Senior Year: What is style, again? Translation: Who knows.

Regardless of whether you’re a freshman or senior, we all struggle with our style…and that’s alright. With each transition in life it is normal to refine your style; whatever that means is up to you.
