Our personal style is influenced by a variety of factors: culture, family and friends, media, and style icons. Perhaps the most influential of these is the style icon. Whether they are celebrities, bloggers, or people in the fashion industry, we look to these people for style guidance. Typically, style icons are so well connected in the industry that they are among the first to learn about new trends. They attend fashion shows, have access to new and exclusive designs, and have countless industry connections. As college students, unfortunately, we do not have the same status as these icons. Although we may not have the same status or connections, we attempt to emulate their style by observing the trends they sport and how they style them. Whenever I am in a bit of a style rut, I always look to my favorite style icons for inspiration. Looking to do the same? Here are some noteworthy icons:
1. Tilda Swinton: Let’s be honest, Tilda can pull off any style or trend. What makes her such an icon is how she boldly embraces new trends, does not abide by
gender-based style norms, and has a strong sense of identity in her style.
2. Jenna Lyons: The Creative Director of J.Crew epitomizes the classic, quirky aesthetic that J.Crew is so well known for. She mixes unlikely patterns and prints on a regular basis without looking costume-like. No matter what trend she is sporting, she manages to look effortlessly sophisticated and chic.
3. Miroslava Duma: You know that one handbag or dress you saw in the latest Chanel, Dior, or Balenciaga fashion show? Odds are, Miroslava already owns that product and has styled it in the most amazing ways possible.
These are just a couple of the countless style icons. Furthermore, icons are not solely celebrities and people with status. Our style icons can be a relative, friend, or person in the community. Make sure to stick to your personal style and not draw too much inspiration from others.
