If you haven’t discovered the magic of hair masks, you’re seriously missing out. Just like your face, your hair needs nourishment and can gain many benefits from using a mask. Most masks are meant to be applied after shampooing, left on for five to 20 minutes (depending on the mask or the level of treatment) and rinsed out. With that said, make sure to read the directions because the procedure can vary by brand or type of mask. Using a mask specially formulated for your hair type will help you achieve the healthiest hair possible.

Dry and damaged hair

Look for a mask that contains lightweight oils that will restore moisture without weighing your hair down. Some oils to search for are jojoba, sesame, coconut and shea. You can also select masks that contain argon or Moroccan oil.

Curly

Masks that don’t weigh your hair down, add shine and reduce frizz are ideal for girls with curly hair. Using a mask with coconut, avocado or grape seed oils will help you achieve these benefits. After you’ve rinsed the mask out, let your hair air dry. If you’re on the go and need a hairdryer, use one with a curl diffuser attachment for more benefits.

Color treated

Color treated hair needs nourishment that won’t strip the color away. Regular masks can wear away color, so look for products that specifically state they are for color treated hair. These products don’t contain sulfates, which can wash your color down the drain.

Course

If you’re having issues with frizz and tangles, look for masks that will nourish your scalp and hair follicles. Buy masks with ingredients such as macadamia and argon oils to deliver shine, provide elasticity and improve overall health.

Fine

If you have fine hair, it is important search for lighter ingredients that won’t weigh your hair down, while still replenishing your follicles. Some ingredients to look for are honey extracts and jojoba oil. Ingredients that provide extra strength to your hair are also important to avoid breakage and damage, such as biotin and rice protein.

A face mask formulated for your hair type will keep your locks happy and healthy. Don’t be afraid to try or DIY until you find your holy grail hair mask.
