My hair has always been curly and when I was growing up I was ridiculed by my aunts and stepmother which made me hate my hair. As a child and for years after I agreed with their definition of beauty and straightened my hair for years. My father’s sisters forcibly pulled at my tangles causing a level of whiplash I slowly became accustomed to. I thought of my hair as ugly and now my hair along with my definition of beauty is damaged. Something changed in 2016 and I began to see how beautiful my curls were. Though not as curly as they were when I was a young child I love how crazy my hair is. A friend of mine told me that all my crazy is in my hair which at first I thought was an insult, but now I agree; my hair resembles my personality big, crazy and untamed. Right now my hair has crooked, dry curls with blue ends and I love it because no one else has this hair. Avoiding my straightener is not the only a daily struggle I know the biggest accomplishment of hair care improvement has been saying to my aunts that I like my curly hair while they tell me to relax it. So anyone with my kind of hair or any type of curly hair, damaged or not, I want you to love it because it is easy to love healed hair, but to love your hair when it is not its best means you truly love it. Here are a few unique reminders on how lucky you are to hair your hair:
1. Volume! Curly hair has so much volume that you will never have to worry about flat hair days.
2. Even though split ends should be trimmed and truly healthy hair doesn’t have these I want you to know that your split ends look like little plant roots. And who doesn’t want to hair plant-like features for a small amount of time?
3. When you color your hair and the light hits the peaks of your curls your hair looks shiny with dark definitions.
4. Locks in so much moisture. I use globs of conditioner and it feels great running my hands through my wet hair and I can see how my hair will look in the future when it is healthier.
5. Many people have to curl their hair, while you get to wake up with those curls.Â
6. When you tie your hair into a bun you can use it as a pillow when you lie down.
7. When you do not straighten your hair it will smell like whatever your shampoo is and it will not smell like burnt hair.
8. You can scrunch, diffuse, or braid your curls and make them pop!
If you can love your hair at its worst, then you will love it when it is its best!
