Here we go again: It is the last leg of this hard-fought academic race and despite wanting more than ever to halt, put your hands on your knees and heave, the hardest part is still to come. Though we can’t wave the white flag yet, we can certainly sit in the library and fantasize about all the places we would rather be.
1. The Beach
The Florida summer is upon us, which means sweltering heat and the ocean calling. You can’t perfect your tan under the fluorescent lights of a classroom. I would be a sun-kissed goddess, if that were possible. In my head, I am bikini-clad and sipping something strong. Meanwhile, in reality, I am shot-gunning bottles of water or sighing too loudly on the quiet floor of the library. The clear turquoise waters of the Gulf will just have to get by without me until these godforsaken tests are done.
2. Seville
Nothing makes me want to twerk like the stress of finals week. Seville isn’t usually my scene, and even when it is, I can typically be found sobbing over a bloody Mary in the piano bar. Finals tend to change that. Letting loose on the dance floor with a bunch of other struggling students is exactly the kind of comradery I need at a time like this. It is like a study group, but with better music and a worse outcome. Sorry, Club Lib.
3. Bed
All I’m asking for is a nap. Just a 30-minute or 4-hour nap. The books will be there when I wake up and I will feel more refreshed anyway. They always tell us to get enough sleep before exams. Who am I to disagree? It is better to be honest with yourself, too, and actually get in bed. Otherwise, you’ll end up falling face-first into your notes and waking up with a lovely ink and drool tattoo on your forehead.
4. A Concert
Festival season is in full swing. Whether your style is more Coachella or Welcome to Rockville, we can all agree that we would rather be waving our hands in the air like we just don’t care than waving flash cards in front of our unhappy faces while Lana Del Ray blares in our headphones. With that in mind, think of all the concert tickets you could buy if you never bought index cards ever again.
5. Graduation
Actress Lillian Gish once said “A happy life is spent learning, earning, and yearning.” Well, not today, Lillian. I will be here wishing away the last few moments of my undergraduate years with thoughts of that oh so elusive graduation stage dancing in my head. Maybe fighting for the last few credits of this degree is the valiant thing to do, but I will probably be dragging myself across that stage with a caffeine IV protruding from my veins while I ramble about the war that was this degree. Even that is a more pleasant thought than studying.
Don’t be like me and put off studying. At least one of us ought to pass our exams.
