Ways to Get Involved in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWG chapter.

College is an opportunity to break out and try new things. Sure, starting college can be intimidating, but if you asked me what advice I have for anyone in college, it would be to get involved. Not only does it look great on your resume, but you can also meet new people and make friendships. So I thought I’d share with you 5 ways to get involved in college!

1. Join an Organization: from sororities to interest clubs, there are so many options when it comes to joining organizations in college. Whether it’s through the school website, or a student organization fair, find out more about some organizations. Then (depending on your time commitments), pick 2 or 3 organizations that you may be interested in; find out even more about those organizations – maybe attend an interest meeting – and if any are super interesting to you, then join it!

2. Start your own organization: maybe there aren’t many existing organizations at your school that really interest you. Or maybe you just wanna step put of your comfort zone and try something super new. Then start a new organization or bring a chapter of an existing organization to your school (ehem, Her Campus?). It’s definitely a lot of work to start an organization, but it’s definitely worth it.

3. Go to Events: one of the simpler tips, but going to events on campus can really help you break out of your shell, especially if you just started college or transferred to a new college recently. Believe it or not, there are people who go to events by themselves (if there was free food and/or t-shirts, I was one of those people). So if you don’t have anyone to go with, just go! You’ll probably meet some awesome people who could become your friends.

4. Get a Campus Job to do with your interests: a lot of colleges have positions at their radio station, TV station, or newspaper. If media is something you’re interested in (even if you’re not a communications major), then why not try it out?

5. Become a Resident Assistant: if you would have asked me two years if I wanted to be an RA, I would’ve said “heck no.” But over the past few months, I had a change of heart and decided to apply to be an RA. Not gonna lie, at first it can be a little overwhelming, but it’s definitely a rewarding experience getting to interact with and help other students.
