Why Fit In When You Can Stand Out?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWG chapter.

We grow up in a society where we are expected to be the same as everyone else. We are often questioned if we do something that is out of the ordinary. But, how can you ever expect to do something extraordinary if you are seen as “just average”?

Think of your biggest role model. Are they seen as “regular” or “average”? Think about your absolute favorite person. Are they “regular”? Are they just like everyone else? No, probably not. One of my biggest pieces of advice would be to stop trying to be like this girl or that girl because odds are, you two are very different. Everyone has something special and unique about them, find it and embrace that. Discover what makes YOU different than everyone else. Once you learn to be comfortable and confident in your own skin, you begin to get pleasure out of being your own person and standing out. People will notice when you are living your life for you.

One of my favorite places to be myself is within the clothes that I wear. This is the easy part. When I’m shopping I specifically look for things that I think are cute that I have never seen anyone wear before. Yeah, of course there will always be trends to follow and everyone loves what is trendy, but try to put your own flare of style in that outfit. Make it different, make it you, which could be a million and one things. There is nothing wrong with having several styles. I’ll wear flare jeans, platform wedges and a flowered blouse one day and wear an edgy sleek black dress with sneakers the next day. I am all about finding what I like and not caring what anyone else thinks about it. Hey, you could be the next trendsetter.

Now, some of this “standing out” talk probably sounds crazy for someone who may be timid and more “low-key”. However, keep in mind that being yourself and being different does not have to be flashy or over-the-top. As long as you are striving to remain true to who you are and not trying to fit into the standard of today’s world, applause to you. Go out there and be the person YOU want to be. Don’t let anyone tell you to be anything but yourself and don’t let anyone take your shine.

In order to become somebody, you have to be somebody.
