1. Stay Organized
Keeping your notes, work space, and room organized will help keep your mind organized. You will be able to find whatever you need when you need it. Keeping an agenda will help you manage your time wisely and keep track of due dates and test dates. Having organized notes will allow you to add notes easily throughout the semester as well as let you find key topics and answers easily when you go to complete an assignment or study for a test or exam. There will be no last-minute searches for lost items. Organization will save time and effort which will help you stay sane when times get extra stressful.
2. Join a Sport or Extracurricular
Joining a sport or extracurricular activity that you are interested in will help you stay sane in the new semester. It will give you a chance to clear your mind and have some fun. It’s a time to let out frustrations on the rink, on the field, through writing, through acting, etc. Sports and extracurricular activities are a great way to take a mental break from studying as well.
3. Find a Good Group of Friends
Having a good group of friends is always a good idea. Not only will they be there to support you, but they will be there to keep you sane as well. Friends put things into perspective when you cannot see clearly. They will be there to help you out, and studying/doing homework with them can be fun! Also, spending time with friends is a great mental break from the pressures of school.
4. Stay Positive
No matter how bad things seem, you need to stay positive. Let me repeat that. You need to stay positive. Things seem more stressful when thought about in negative ways. It starts to seem like you cannot do anything and it all becomes too much. When you stay positive, things become a little bit easier and suddenly work seems accomplishable and deadlines are met. Staying positive keeps you in a good mood, which can help you from breaking down.
5. Treat Yourself
It may be expensive to go get your favourite dish at your favourite restaurant or go out for a fun night with your friends, but sometimes it’s worth it. After writing that midterm for your hardest class or turning in that huge project that’s worth a lot, treat yourself. It will give you some positive reinforcement. Besides, sometimes you need something you enjoy or something to look forward to in order to keep you sane.
Many times, it is the little things that make the biggest impact. Adding these five things to your university life can help you stay sane through the new semester and all the semesters to come!
