When a new year comes around, everyone tries to come up with resolutions. Common ones are to lose weight, do better in school, volunteer, etc. By the time the year ends, most people have not accomplished its resolution. Before we get into the tips to keep your resolution, you should know that they are not mandatory. It’s great to have goals but it’s also great to be happy. If what you are currently doing works for you, it is not necessary to change it. Resolutions are good to make so that you can accomplish goals and make yourself feel better. Resolutions are to help you feel accomplished and good about yourself, but only help if they do make you feel better, and not worse. Now, here are some tips to help you stick to and accomplish your resolutions.
1. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. When you force yourself to accomplish your goal, it may no longer be enjoyable or beneficial; the last thing you need is another stressful year.
2. Make a plan. If your resolutions are important, make a plan and stick to it. For example, if you would like to work out, try setting a schedule. This will help you stay on track instead of trying to cram in time after your plans have already been set for the week. Â
3. Make it enjoyable. You will never want to stick to a goal if you hate what gets you there. If you want a better grade but reading over notes for hours straight makes you miserable, come up with another system. You could try another way such as flashcards, or group study. You just need to find what works for you. Â
4.Don’t put a timeline on your resolution. Just because you didn’t reach your exact goal by the next year does not mean that it’s dead. As long as you made progress that you’re happy with, and you keep working at your goal, that is great.
5. Don’t beat yourself up if you decide not to continue with your resolution. A lot of things don’t work out, and just because it was a goal at the beginning does not mean that you can’t change it by the end. Values and priorities change every year, so can your resolutions.
6. Keep positive. Instead of focusing on what you didn’t do, focus on what you did do. For example, if you didn’t volunteer as much as you wanted, think about how you used that time. Maybe you spent more time focusing on school or spending time with special people. There is always a bright side.
Resolutions are great, however, do not put too much pressure on yourself, and don’t worry if it doesn’t work out. If you are happy at the end of the year, that is all that matters.Â
