Pros and Cons of Working in Retail During the Holidays

Pros:

• If you like Christmas music, you get to hear it all the time.

• Sometimes you can dress up as Christmas characters on your shifts leading up to Christmas.

• Secret Santa for the staff! 

• You get to see all of the merchandise first and so you can pick out gifts before any customer can.

• The store is decorated festively.

• Staff holiday parties.

• Potlucks and goodies.

• Getting more hours, holiday pay, and Christmas bonuses (if you’re lucky).

Cons:

• If you don’t like Christmas music, you have to hear it all the time.

• The customers aren’t just your regulars who know you and are kind to you. Now you have to deal with assholes who storm in, take what they want, and blame you for any little thing.

• People are in a “rush” (even though Christmas is still over a month away) so they leave the whole store a mess.

• You have to repeat your holiday return policy, any possible holiday sales or contests, and, “Would you like a gift receipt?” for each transaction.

• Working so much you can’t study adequately for your exams.

• More traffic in your store means any cleaning/restocking that you do will quickly be undone.

• Not being able to fit all the merchandise on the floor (but doing it anyway because you’re told to).

• Working through possible S.A.D.

• The store gets so cold.
