Stress and Anxiety from University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWindsor chapter.

I’ve been extremely worried and anxious lately about graduating from university, what my next steps are going to be, and what the future holds for me. I am certain many readers will be able to relate to this feeling, so I compiled a list of methods I use to center myself  when I feel overwhelmed with anxiety.

1.   Remind yourself that it is ok not to have everything figured out. You will figure it out in your own time. A teacher in high school once told me, “Someone will tell you one day what you are meant to do.” He used his own personal life as an example: he was in university for 8 years, but a child he tutored told him he should be a tutor. He then realized how much he loved teaching and working with kids and realized he was right. Remember this is not Cinderella; there is no deadline!

2.   Do not to compare yourself to other people. Everyone has their owns strengths and weaknesses and grows at their own pace. Focus on yourself and your own strengths and capitalize on them.

3.   Look to people who inspire you and motive you.  Look at how they got to where they are today; emulate their positive qualities.

4.   Do not let anyone stop you from believing in yourself and your dreams. You’ve heard the countless stories of people who were told by their professors etc. they will not make it and they defied all expectations. It really happens, you guys.

5.   Be persistent.  As corny as it is, no one ever gained anything by giving up. I have so many examples around me of brilliant, talented women who overcame many obstacles to get to where they are.
