St. Patrick’s Day is a worldwide celebrated holiday and in the United States there are several cities across the country that take pride in their St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Lucky for UWM students, St. Patrick’s Day falls on our first day of spring break. Looking for a quick and easy spring break destination and a chance to celebrate the popular holiday differently this year? Here are a list of the top St. Patrick’s Day destination cities.
Chicago, Illinois
Chicago is just a quick two hour drive south from Milwaukee making it easy and affordable to getaway for a few days. Every year, the Windy city dyes their Chicago River green in honor of St. Patrick’s day. It’s a shade of green that will make the river sparkle on a clear, sunny day. The formula magically changing the river green is top secret making this tradition very special to its residents and visitors. Along with the dyeing of the river, Chicago hosts many parades, bar crawls and events throughout the city during St. Patty’s Day weekend.
Boston, Massachusetts
While driving may be tricky, there are affordable plane and train rides from Milwaukee to Boston. With their professional basketball team being the Celtics, you can guess Boston takes a lot of pride in their beloved Irish descent. From Irish pubs, to numerous parades, the city is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day from dawn until dusk. Explore Boston’s Irish neighborhood that makes you feel as if you’re strolling in Dublin, Ireland. Bring your dancing shoes because Irish folk music floods the street making everyone want to get up off their seat and celebrate!
Savannah, Georgia
Craving that warm air and sunshine? Did you know Savannah, Georgia is listed as a top St. Patrick’s Day destination?! Yes, it is true, Savannah is home several annual Irish traditions including the dyeing of the Forsyth Park fountain. It is a beautiful landmark in downtown Savannah that locals hold dear to their hearts. St. Patrick’s Day events are held all weekend long, but if the beach is calling your name, Savannah’s beaches are only 25 minutes from downtown.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Yes, our beloved Milwaukee is listed as a top St. Patrick’s Day destination. Milwaukee has a rich history of Irish descent, but it is also home to many popular Irish pubs and of course, the one and only Shamrock Shuffle bar crawl. If a spring break getaway is not on your radar this year, you can celebrate the popular holiday in our very own city. Starting from the first weekend in March to the actual holiday on March 17th, the city is celebrating all month long with local events and social gatherings. Have a “staycation” and attend a St. Patrick’s Day event you’ve always wanted to see! Sometimes “staycations” are the best vacations.
