Campus Celebrity Chandler Wilkerson ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Meet Chandler! Chandler is a laid back guy who you can often find in the Mass Media Building. He loves his fraternity and his brothers, “My fraternity is one of the things that have made VSU a life changing experience for me.” Get to know a little bit more about Chandler below!

Full Name: James Chandler Wilkerson

Age: 21

Classification: Senior

Major: Mass Media

Hometown: Hogansville, GA

Involvement at VSU: I’m an active member of the Kool Kappa Delta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated. I’ve served as Secretary, Vice President, and I’m currently the Greek Week Chair. Blu Phi!

HC: What do you want to do in the field of Mass Media? What’s your dream job?

Chandler: My dream job is to be an on air play by play announcer. No particular sport, but sports are my passion and I plan to have a job in the sports media realm.

HC: How do you feel about what you’ve accomplished so far?

Chandler: I feel pretty great, I’m not a person who particularly brags about my accomplishments but the things I take part in I tend to give it my all. Simply because I’ve always been taught that if you decide on doing something you go out of your way to do it good. But I have my sights set on my next big accomplishment, graduating in May.

HC: Do you take part in anything off campus?

Chandler:  I am getting experience in my field. Outside of working my serving job I currently work as a videographer for InTheGame Magazine, a sports media company that produces content about high school sports in the area, mostly football. I really enjoy it because they send me to Friday night football games to film for them, so I get to do what I love and not to mention I get the best seat in the house.

HC: Who or what inspires you the most?

Chandler: A big part of what I do has a lot to do with my family. I grew up in a small town where there really isn’t anything to do, so my family was the only thing I had as a means of fun or encouragement. That’s how I got my passion for sports, my folks would all get together for a big game on weekdays or weekends because everyone was so close by and we always had fun. But if I had to narrow it down to a single person, my biggest inspiration has always been my mom. A majority of my life she raised me and my little sister as a single mom, and that’s a job that’s hard for even the most determined people. Whenever I get down and out about something I think of her, and I pick it up again.

HC: What do you plan on pursuing after you graduate?

Chandler: I’m currently exploring internship options in the Atlanta and the Charlotte, NC area. Both are great sports cities and I would love to get my foot in the door in either one of those markets. It also helps that I have family that lives in both of those areas so that if things get tough I can have some people to help me out until I can really get on my feet.

HC: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Chandler: That’s a tough question. Hopefully, you all will see me on a television reporting the sports or broadcasting a big game 10 years from now saying, “Hey, I know that guy, we went to college together,” and your buddies of course will never believe you until you Google it and shove it in their face. That’s the impression I want to leave.

HC: How do you practice time management? Any tips?

Chandler: My best tip is to try your best to not procrastinate. We are all guilty of it from time to time, but if you can limit it, it’s not only good for you but it’s good for the betterment of people around you. As a general time management skill, I try to keep myself busy. If I’m busy, I’ll get more things done.
