The CW’s Supergirl is not worth the watch in my opinion. It’s just not giving and here’s why:
- It’s very hard to avoid comparing it to the other CW/hero shows. The Flash has to be my favorite CW show of all time, and even though it isn’t perfect, it pulls the heart strings just right! But Supergirl? I do not connect. The only time I truly noticed my own emotional investment is when the romance came into play and that feels cliche…like c’mon, it’s one of the few Woman-led superhero shows and romance is the only strong suit I could find?
- Supergirl was too normal. I felt like the show was really pushing the narrrative of Kara’s humanity being just like ours (regular humans). I understand the idea of relatability in that sense, but what I always liked about superheroes was that they’re just like us…when they are humans too. The Kryptonians are legitimate aliens! They aren’t human, and I do not think their issues should be so close to regular human issues.
- What ever happened to super? I don’t think the show pushed the “super” in Supergirl as much as I’d like. The show was too quick to introduce Kryptonite before viewers could dwell in the “superhuman” impossibilities and fantasies. I did not feel like I had enough time to “Oooh” and “Ahhh” about the many uses of super stregnth, ice breath, lazer eyes, speed and more! The introduction of Kryptonite and other extremely challenging foes really diminished the fun for me.
I honestly haven’t even finished the show, so if I ever do, maybe I’ll come back with an update.
