Meet the Family: Party Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

If there’s one thing I have learned since being in college it’s that people are truly diverse. This is especially true for when you go out for a night on the town. When alcohol is involved groups of friends become family and things start to get interesting. Here are the 5 types of friends in each group:

1. The Grandma

“The Grandma” of the group will usually be the friend who never wanted to go out anyways but they feel like they had no choice. Every time the group hangs out she makes sure that everyone eats before they start drinking and she also makes sure the 3 essentials are in tack: keys, wallet (ID), and phone. Grandma is usually also the designated driver and calls/texts everyone the next morning to see if they’re alive and well. While she may not always be the most fun in the group, she is one person you can’t live without.

2. Mom

Mommy dearest of the friend group comes with a lot of responsibilities, including making sure that she can compose herself when things start to fall apart. Mom knows how to have fun and she is most likely the planner in the group and the pre-game socialite. When push comes to shove, she is also the hair-holder for the friend who finds themselves throwing up, the shoulder to cry on for when you see your ex out with another girl and the hand-holder for when you can’t seem to walk a straight line. She pretty much does it all without breaking a sweat and only a couple of mixed drinks in her system.

3. Your favorite aunt

“The Aunt” in each group definitely adds some flavor to an already interesting combination. While her role should be like that of the mom in the group she is a lot more relaxed. She doesn’t always go out so when she does you can bet it’s going to be a good time! The shots are coming fast and there’s not a single song that isn’t her song. Even after mom has said no to another drink, you can usually hear her in the background saying, “Come on, let her live a little.” She’s not always the best influence but she’s not a bad influence either. You wish she came around more but when she does you enjoy her presence and wild sense of adventure!

4. Big sis

The older sister in the group only has one goal and that’s to make sure you don’t get in any altercations. As long as you stay out of trouble and no one gets in your face then her night goes well! She is your favorite person to party with and the ultimate wing-woman. Big sis knows how to have a good time but she also knows when she’s hit her limit and she will probably be the first person to go to sleep once you guys get back to the house. Sometimes she gets on your nerves because you guys spend so much time together but there’s no one else you’d rather invite to the party.

    5. The baby aka Loose Cannon

There’s no way she can be stopped and at this point no one tries to stop her anymore! She pre-games before the pre-game and everyone in the group knows that you have to keep an eye on her. The baby in the group is the professional partier and even though she may not have been partying long she definitely parties hard. It’s fitting that her nickname is loose cannon because after a long week there’s no doubt she’s going to get wild. Everyone in the group has their ups and downs with her but she makes every weekend so interesting and she’s the life of the party. The baby of the group is what keeps the group centered. Without her there would be no funny stories, no late night adventures and no random pictures in your phone that you can’t explain. You have to love her.

At some point in your friend group you’ll play more than one role. With age comes responsibilities and with responsibilities comes the need for a strong drink! Each friend plays a part in making the group what it is and you should never take anyone for granted. At the end of the day your party group aren’t just friends, they’re family.
