Music is power. We listen to music for many different reasons. Sometimes we use it to pump ourselves up, to calm ourselves down, or to help us focus on doing our homework. We even use music as an escape from the harsh realities of the world. I’ve used music for all these reasons and more. I’m someone who listens to music everywhere and all the time. I have a playlist for everything. See, for me, I make playlists according to the feelings I have and the feelings I want to have. Music, just like everything else in this world, is energy. We can feed ourselves certain types of energy depending on what you want to bring in. We want to be sure that the energy we bring in is beneficial to us; is something that feeds us, rather than drains us. Music has the power to be medicinal. This is why morning playlists are so important. They set the tone for your day. As someone who lives with depression and anxiety, it’s not often that I just wake up and I’m automatically ready to take on the day. Most of the time, I wake up in paranoia about the things I have to get done and the energy I don’t have to actually get them done. I wake up stressed, unmotivated, and angry at myself because of the stress and lack of motivation I have. Everyday I have to remind myself that my thoughts and feelings aren’t me, but mere responses and reactions from present and past circumstances playing on a loop. I’ve learned to manage these feelings by 1. acknowledging that they’re there and 2. setting a mood that poses what I’m feeling. My morning playlist has been my hero in that sense. It opens me up to feeling gratefulfor another day and It helps me get into good spirits and reaffirm myself in a way that motivates me to make the best out of my circumstances. I want to share this playlist in hopes to give a little upliftment to those who wake up with these same feelings. I hope to provide you all with a tool you can use as emotional support.
- If God Spoke – Chloe x Halle
If I could describe this song in one word, it’d be glorious. This is the kind of song that would bring you to tears no matter who you are. This is song that takes the point of view of “God” or whatever higher power you may believe in. From this higher point of view, this “God” expresses acknowledgment on how confusing life can be. Not knowing who you are or where to go. As students, I feel we’ve all hit points in our college experience or even life experience where we question everything. We question who we identify as, what we believe in, what we’re passionate about, why we’re even here in the first place. It seems like life just doesn’t work out in our favor in these times. This higher being acknowledges this and reminds us that these foggy moments are normal and necessary. The “God” challenges us to practice patience and compassion with self in these moments. Even when we may not know where life may take us, to continue to believe and trust in ourselves in whatever way our souls move us. This song reminds me that life is a circus. There are a lot of things that happen around and within us that we can’t control. All we can control is how we respond. This song encourages me to continue to pour love into myself and the world around me through it all.
2. Morning Sunrise – Weldon Irvine
I feel I’d be doing both of us a disservice if I didn’t include this song in the playlist. This is a song that fills you with a sense of gratitude. Not only are the vibes immaculate, but the dreamy, cathartic vocals on top of the beautiful lyrics makes this song feel like a mantra more than just some pretty song. This song affirms and speaks prosperity and fruitfulness onto your morning. It’s a good song to meditate to in the morning.
3. AirDrop – Rad Museum, Wonstein
Picking up the tempo a bit as we get further into our morning, the next song on the playlist is called AirDrop by an artist named Rad Museum. This song is in Korean, but the lyrics touch on the way humans are connected and we share the same looping thoughts and feelings as if we’re airdropping them to one another. This lyrics serve as food for thought in the mornings; an interesting take on how we share experiences. You never have to go through anything alone. If you’re having a hard time just living your day to day life, even if you’re having the best time living your day to day life. It’s going to express what you’re feeling to people you trust. 9/10 you’ll find someone who has shared the same experience you have and can help by giving advice or just being an ear for you to vent. It’s also just a really fun and unique song. Anyone can find pleasure listening to it.
4. SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY – Amaarae, Moily
This is another song that serves as a morning mantra or affirmation for me. This songs puts me in a headspace that claims future blessings and prosperity; acting as if it’s already mine even when I feel I’m lacking in both. This is a good song to get you to focus on all the blessings and miracles that can come your way throughout the day. People may doubt you and at times, you may even doubt yourself. Tune out all of that loud noise and stay focused to the goal. It’s a good song for affirming yourself as someone who is abundant in health and wealth.
5. Naturally – Megan Thee Stallion
We’re closing the playlist with the one and only Hot Girl. Megan’s music is boss music. Period. This song upholds that legacy, for sure. This is a song you listen to when you want to praise yourself for just naturally being IT. To remind yourself that you don’t have to try hard to get the blessings you get. They come to you with ease and you never have to worry whether they’re there or not. The world is yours and you can and will have what you want out of it. Why? Because YOU say so. That’s the kind of mood this song gives. Megan blessed us with this one. It’s always good to focus on just loving yourself just because and finding comfort in expresses you love for self OUT LOUD. In a world that strives to keep us down, it’s important that we fill ourselves up with love. In this, we better trust ourselves to be the best we can be, no matter what’s up against us.
I really hope you enjoy this playlist. It’s a short but impactful one. All these songs individually bring me good energy at the start of my day and pumps me up to prepare for the day ahead. Let me know what these song’s do for you. Whether you like the songs or not, I hope I at least showed you how beneficial it is to intentionally enjoy your morning and provide yourself with a good environment for you to ease into your day. Have an amazing morning!
