This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

It all started as a class project. In Dr. Hochschild’s 3710 sociology class, it was our responsibility to socially construct an event, and make people believe that it was real. That’s exactly what we did. As a class we picked a topic that would be beneficial to Valdosta State University’s campus. Most of us have heard how big of an issue STDs are on our campus, but not much has been done until now. How do we expect anything to change if major actions aren’t made? As a class we created a successful  holiday, STD Awareness Day. It’s important to talk about serious topics, and we brought this hushed toned issue to the light.

These are some of the students that put together the event, wearing the shirts that were made specifically for the event.

The sheet sign was made in efforts to make as many VSU students aware of the event as possible.

Condoms and pamphlets with information were passed out, all of which where provided by the VSU Student Health Center.

It was a pleasure to see this event come together. It was such a success that students and faculty think that this event should be held every year. My only hope is that we helped students with the information that was given to them. Be safe and X out STD’s!
