Transitioning Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

The first day of autumn is fast approaching (September 23rd) and before you know it, it’ll be time to trade in those crop tops and super short shorts for cardigans and boots. Until then, what do you wear? The right clothing and shoes to wear during the seasonal changes can be tricky because some days and nights will be warm while others may be cool. What some don’t know is that the key to a smooth transition is to pull and style what you may already have in your closet or go out and find items that can be comfortably worn during both seasons! Here are some closet must-haves to help you transition your wardrobe from summer to fall!

The Kimono

Having a kimono (or 3) in your closet is a must-have simply because they go with ev-ery-thing! Shorts, jeans and dresses – you name it! What’s also great about investing in a kimono is that you can layer as much as you want with it.

Wear it now with a tank and shorts and you’re ready to go!

Wear it later in the fall with a pair of jeans and a casual tee. You can’t go wrong with this item!

Harem/Jogger pants

These style of pants are comfy, light, and will leave you feeling free as you go about your day. Depending upon your mood they can either be dressed up or dressed down but still allow you to look like a fashionista.

Pair them now with a tank top.

For the fall, wear them with a light sweater or a blazer.

Oxfords

Oxfords are extremely versatile and fashionable and they are actually the style of shoe that you can wear year round. They come in various styles and textures, perfect for pairing with different outfits.

Wear them now with a skirt of your choice.

Wear them later with cuffed jeans, a blazer and scarf.

Button downs

Button downs are a fashion staple that you probably already have in your closet. Because they add such chicness to an ensemble, they make for a great transitional piece from summer to fall, whether plaid, chambray, or just solid colored.

Wear it now with a pair of shorts.

Layer it later with a chunky sweater, skinny jeans and boots.

Maxi skirts/Maxi dresses

Maxi dresses and maxi skirts are responsible for why many girls look forward to the summer simply because they can be so flattering and comfortable. The sky is the limit when it comes to styling these two! Can’t fathom the thought of giving up your maxi skirts and maxi dresses for the fall? Well, you don’t have to! It’s all about layering, layering, and more layering!

Style your favorite maxi skirt now with a graphic tee and sandals.

Style your maxi dress now with a timeless jewelry piece and your favorite pair of shoes.

Style your maxi skirt later with a patterned sweater and a pair of booties.

Add on layers later to your maxi dress by wearing a denim jacket and throwing on a scarf for an added touch!

Dos and don’ts of transitioning your wardrobe from summer to fall:

DO Stretch out sandal season

Hold off on boxing up your sandals. The weather may be changing soon but you still have time to have those toes out!

DO Accessorize

Accessories ultimately complete your outfit. Wearing a plain tee and jeans? Throw on a richly hued infinity scarf and see what a difference it makes with your getup.

DO Pick up on wearing fall colors

Burgundy, mustard, teal, jade, plum and so many more colors are perfect for the fall. Rock more of these hues as the leaves begin to change colors!

DON’T do away with every summer item

As mentioned before, some summer items can be worn throughout the fall. It’s all about how you piece them together! Don’t be afraid to pair your favorite summer dress with a cardigan.

DON’T over layer

Always remember: Less is more!

DON’T mix seasons too much

For obvious reasons, mixing your seasons too much isn’t the greatest idea. For one, you’ll appear to be confused and two, your attire will have no function despite the weather. Avoid this fashion blunder by actually following through with a theme for your outfit.

Happy transitioning ladies!
