Olivia Steen graduated in the Spring of 2014 with a degree in Mass Media and worked for Video Production Services while at VSU. She currently works as a Photographer and Editor at WTXL in Tallahassee, Florida and does reporting on the weekends. At her job she gathers news content, as well as shooting and editing video footage for the shows. “My favorite part about my job is definitely going out and meeting people. I love talking to the people in the community, hearing stories, and recreating them for TV,” said Steen. She has accepted a Reporter position at WHNT in Huntsville, Alabama which she will begin at the end of August!
Olivia loves being employed in her field of choice, “I love the fact that we are able to provide the community with vital information. If something is going on in the world or their community, they are able to turn to us to find out more. I also like that we can serve as a voice for those who feel voiceless at times.”
She felt pretty prepared to enter her field, “I feel like I was prepared for the most part. School gave me the foundation I needed, but I wish I had more hands on experiences.”
Olivia has advice for current VSU Mass Media students, “Find internships that deal with your interests and get experience. Relevant experience on a resume is key to landing a job in the industry out of college. I also suggest keeping a demo reel or portfolio of all of your work. Experience on a resume looks good, but it looks even better when you can show off your work! Also, find mentors who are either in or have been in the industry.”
Olivia Steen is proof that with ambition and hardwork, you can be employed in the field of your choice and follow your dreams. ” Be patient! This industry is extremely competitive and finding jobs can take time. Never give up! A delay does not equal a deny.”
