6 Theme Ideas For Your Next Party

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

I love theme parties and event planning, so throwing themed parties is one of my favorite hobbies. Here are some of the best themes we have had over the last year. Hope they can provide some inspiration for your next party!

Murder in Margaritaland

A murder mystery themed party, Murder in Margaritaland, was a giant luau! We had teriyaki chicken, ham and cheese sliders, margaritas, daquiris, and pina coladas. For games, we had a tiki disc toss and a photo booth. For the murder mystery, each person had their own character and objectives to complete. Awards were given for best dressed, best actor, richest character, and super sleuth.

Heaven & Hell

For my best friend’s 22nd birthday, she requested a Heaven & Hell theme. For Heaven & Hell, you create two separate sections of the house and designate one as Heaven and one as Hell. Attendees are encouraged to dress as an Angel or Devil. There is theme music and themed drinks for each section as well as certain checklists to gain entrance to Heaven.

Murder at the Juice Joint

For my 22nd birthday, I hosted my first murder mystery party. It was a Roaring 20’s theme, and the house was turned into a prohibition-era speakeasy. For this story, attendees were split into the Northside and Southside gangs, and in addition, there were employees of the Juice Joint. Each attendee had a character and objectives to complete pre and post murder.

Award were given for best dressed, best actor, richest character, and super sleuth. We had famous gangster photos throughout the house, theme music, and everyone got really into the game.

Spiderman Rave

For Patrick’s 22nd birthday, he wanted a combination of a Spiderman party and a rave. Just in case you didn’t know, the ingredients in energy drinks and red bull glow under a blacklight. Add some strobe lights, a DJ, and a Spiderman themed cake, and voila!

Disney Kingdom

For Bella’s 21st birthday, she wanted a Disney themed party. Each attendee was encouraged to dress as their favorite Disney character. We had a checklist with Disney related tasks. Our signature drink was called “Be My Guest.” We even had a Disney karaoke singalong!  Characters present: Yao and Shang from Mulan, Emperor Kuzco, Belle, Ariel, Pochahontas, Megara, Hercules, Pegasus, Slightly from Peter Pan, and Mickey Mouse

Superheroes vs. Villians

For Halloween, we had a superheroes vs. villains party. Heroes: Sailor Jupiter, Tuxedo Mask, Black Canary, and Batman. Villains: Darth Vader, Joker, Gaara, Chief, Punisher, Scarecrow. Antiheroes: Poison Ivy and Deadpool. Again, we had themed music, themed food and drinks. It was my favorite Halloween to date.

Allison Plattsmier (formerly Quintanilla) is a Nashville native who grew up with the nickname Quesadilla and was asked, almost on a daily basis, how someone who is Hispanic could be THAT pale. Allison is quite the workaholic but don’t worry, she’s recently narrowed down her number of jobs from 7 to 4….progress is progress. When she isn’t working, she is spending time with her friends or hanging at home with her husband, Kris, and her two cats Sheena and Jacinda. She is an Escape Game fanatic and has successfully broken out of every Escape Game the Escape Game Nashville has to offer (come at me bro). She has a borderline unhealthy obsession with trivia and has seen every chick flick you can imagine. A student in Vanderbilt's Community Development and Action program, Allison has a passion for service and bringing people together for a common purpose.
