The Best Classes on Campus (and they’re at the Rec!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.
I’ve never been a runner. I dreaded Fridays, when we ran the mile in Middle School P.E., and even scheduled appointments with my college counselor so that I could miss PE senior year of high school (#noshame). However, I know it’s important to get up and get moving, and while the walk from Branscomb to Peabody seems far, it really isn’t enough. Luckily, I’ve found some fantastic group fitness classes at the rec that are super fun and high energy. For anyone who feels self-conscious in classes: don’t. Vandy’s rec classes have everyone from freshman girls to middle aged women (not kidding). Jump in and have fun!

1. Zumba with Rebecca: The Rec has two Zumba instructors: Hannah and Rebecca. Hannah is great if you like more of the Latin music, but I like Rebecca because she does hip hop and pop music too. This isn’t your mom’s Zumba class- my favorites include All I Do is Win and Bang Bang.

2. Turbokick with Mark: Mark is hands down the funniest fitness instructor in the world. He has a great southern accent and an even better personality. The class is kind of like kickboxing, but without any equipment. It’s fun and the time flies by!

3. Cardio dance with Jenny: Jenny is the fittest woman on the planet. This class incorporates exercises that I’ve done in Pilates, Tabata, and Barre classes and has really fun music. A lot of people love this class and go every week, so they’re advanced and know all the moves, but its great for beginners as well.

Honestly, an hour of working out is going to feel so much better in the long run than another hour of Netflix or any other kind of study break, so head on over to the rec and, as Rebecca says before Zumba, “Sweat it out!” See you there!
