How to Make Homemade Candles

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

Turning your favorite glass bottle into a colorful scented candle is easy and fun! Plus, it would make a great Christmas gift for friends and family!

To cut your glass bottle into an open top mold:
1)   Soap a piece of string in rubbing alcohol.
2)   Tie string around desired cut area on bottle
3)   Light the string on fire and let it burn around the bottle for a about 10-15 seconds
4)   Immerse the bottle into an ice cold water bath

The temperature shock should make a nice clean break in the glass around where the string was. (Sometimes you may need to do this process more than once to make the glass break.)

So now that you have your glass bottle cut open, (or if you’re using a pre-bought glass jar- such as a mason jar) it’s time to melt the wax and create your candle.

What you’ll need:
A block of wax
Liquid scent
Wax color blocks
Melting pot
Glass bottle or jar
Wick

First, melt the wax in a pot by placing the pot with the wax into a pot with boiling water.  When the wax is melted and you are left with a clear liquid, add your desired color block and 5-10 drops of your scent (depending on how fragrant you want your candle to be).  Make sure the wick is in the candle where you would like it.  It is easier to make sure the wick stays in and straight by tying it around a pencil and placing it across the top of the glass jar.  Carefully pour the wax in a wait for it to dry.

Stacey Oswald, originally from South Florida, came to Vanderbilt as a member of the class of 2015 and got involved with HerCampus her freshman year. She became assistant editor that year and is now the Campus Correspondent for Vanderbilt HC as a sophomore. Stacey is currently a columnist for Ask Miss A- Nashville and the life section of The Hustler. She's also very involved in her sorority, Kappa Delta, as well as Invisible Children. Outside of school and her extracurriculars, Stacey finds happiness in many sources, the most crucial being exercise and the sun. She loves to attend exercise classes and is an avid runner; she recently completed the Country Music Half Marathon. She also loves Vitamin D, especially when on the beach- though of course, she only soaks up the sun after applying SPF. A few of the things Stacey couldn't live without? Good food (especially from Sweet Cece's, Bricktops, and Samurai Sushi), great books (The Hypnotist's Love Story is a recent favorite), her family back in Florida, her wonderful boyfriend, and all of the great friends she's made at Vanderbilt.
