A Lesson in Layering

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

You could say this “polar-vortex” has Nashville desperately confused. Students who flocked from the East Coast in hopes of escaping yet another brutal winter were sadly disappointed when Nashville was faced with this unexpected cold front. On the other hand, kids from the West Coast are forced to bear their first actual winter, causing them to wonder what the key to staying warm is. In other words, what could make the long trek from Commons to Wilson at 8 a.m. somewhat bearable? LAYERS. Yes, the key to warmth, ladies, is simply wearing layers. When one typically thinks of putting on layers, the typical skiing outfit first comes to mind. But in reality, layers do not need to entail an unfashionable bear-looking, bulgy outfit. Although unknown to many, there are many ways to make layers a fashionable way to approach the weather. Here is just how:

1) Long sleeve shirt: The first key to success is your first and most important layer, a long sleeve shirt. Pick a more neutral color, as you will later try to add either a pop of color or pattern with your sweater. The sole purpose of the long-sleeve tee is for warmth and extra comfort.

2) A cute + warm sweater: Here is where the style part comes in. Pick your most coveted and warm pullover sweater. It can have stripes, polka dots, a pop of color, whatever you choose! This will be your “accent” piece and will ultimately pull your bundled outfit together.

3) A non-zip flowy sweater: The next key to success comes in with a flowy and open sweater that will allow your pull-over sweater to still be visible. This added sweater will help you gain a little more warmth, but will still compliment the rest of your outfit without adding bulkiness.

4) Thick winter coat: The last key to success is your puffy coat, which is probably the most crucial aspect to your layered outfit. Don’t leave your dorm without it!

Vanderbilt

Stacey Oswald, originally from South Florida, came to Vanderbilt as a member of the class of 2015 and got involved with HerCampus her freshman year. She became assistant editor that year and is now the Campus Correspondent for Vanderbilt HC as a sophomore. Stacey is currently a columnist for Ask Miss A- Nashville and the life section of The Hustler. She's also very involved in her sorority, Kappa Delta, as well as Invisible Children. Outside of school and her extracurriculars, Stacey finds happiness in many sources, the most crucial being exercise and the sun. She loves to attend exercise classes and is an avid runner; she recently completed the Country Music Half Marathon. She also loves Vitamin D, especially when on the beach- though of course, she only soaks up the sun after applying SPF. A few of the things Stacey couldn't live without? Good food (especially from Sweet Cece's, Bricktops, and Samurai Sushi), great books (The Hypnotist's Love Story is a recent favorite), her family back in Florida, her wonderful boyfriend, and all of the great friends she's made at Vanderbilt.
