Red Carpet Trends for Your Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

With the Golden Globes and SAG Awards behind us and the Grammies and Academy Awards around the corner, red carpet fashion trends are undoubtedly emerging. As college students, it is sometimes difficult to incorporate these award show styles into our own wardrobes. But luckily for you, I have listed eight red carpet styles below along with a budget-friendly option.

1.  Red—Stars like Elizabeth Moss (in Michael Kors at the SAG Awards) and Renee Bargh (in Steven Khalil at the SAG Awards) rocked red on the carpet. Bluefly offers some great red dresses at reduced prices as shown below.

2.  Color Blocking—Color blocking was popular with Taylor Swift (in Carolina Herrera at the Golden Globes) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (in Monique Lhuillier at the SAG Awards). BCBG is a good place to look for more casual color blocking options.

(BCBG- $268)

3.  Plunging Neckline—Some stars chose to show a little more skin with a daring neckline. Amy Adams (in Valentino at the Golden Globes) and Margot Robbie (in Gucci at the Golden Globes) were two of them. NastyGal and Asos offer many options for a low v-neck.

(ASOS- $72)

4.  Turquoise—This popular shade of blue was seen on stars such as Lupita Nyong’o (in Gucci at the SAG Awards) and Reese Witherspoon (in Calvin Klein at the Golden Globes). Free People has a fun turquoise dress that can be dressed up or down.

(Free People on Revolve Clothing- $62)

5.  Backless Gowns—If plunging necklines aren’t your style, but you still would like to show some skin, backless dresses can be a good option. Emma Watson demonstrated this perfectly (in Dior at the Golden Globes). Urban Outfitters is a good place to look for your own backless dress.

(Urban Outfitters- $19.99)

(Urban Outfitters- $59)

6.  Black and Gold—As Vandy students, we understand how stylish a black and gold dress can be. Hollywood ladies Katrina Bowden (in Bagdley Mischka at at the SAG Awards) and Lizzy Caplan (in Emilio Pucci at the Golden Globes) finally caught up to our trend. Black and gold dresses can be purchased at Free People.

(Free People- $98)

(Free People- $149.95)

Vanderbilt

Stacey Oswald, originally from South Florida, came to Vanderbilt as a member of the class of 2015 and got involved with HerCampus her freshman year. She became assistant editor that year and is now the Campus Correspondent for Vanderbilt HC as a sophomore. Stacey is currently a columnist for Ask Miss A- Nashville and the life section of The Hustler. She's also very involved in her sorority, Kappa Delta, as well as Invisible Children. Outside of school and her extracurriculars, Stacey finds happiness in many sources, the most crucial being exercise and the sun. She loves to attend exercise classes and is an avid runner; she recently completed the Country Music Half Marathon. She also loves Vitamin D, especially when on the beach- though of course, she only soaks up the sun after applying SPF. A few of the things Stacey couldn't live without? Good food (especially from Sweet Cece's, Bricktops, and Samurai Sushi), great books (The Hypnotist's Love Story is a recent favorite), her family back in Florida, her wonderful boyfriend, and all of the great friends she's made at Vanderbilt.
