If you know what Vanderbilt is about, then you know that Greek life dominates the social scene. Not only is Vandy located in the South, a.k.a. the center of Greek activity, but it was also just voted by University Primetime as the school with the best Greek life experience. Vandy participates in Spring Recruitment, as they want new freshmen to adjust to college life and meet friends outside of their future Greek communities. Although a kind thought, truthfully, first semester is filled with anxiety regarding where you will end up and small talk with intimidating upperclassman, which let’s be honest, is never fun. However, the long and much anticipated wait finally ended on January 19th, when Bid Day finally occurred for the Commodores.  Each of the ten sororities on campus eagerly welcomed the new members of their 2014 pledge classes. After a fun-filled day, which for some included a dance party at Dan’s or karaoke at Lonnie’s, Bid Day 2014 came to a close, leaving roughly 600 girls wondering, What’s next? Well “babies,” as you are most commonly referred to, here is what is in store for you now that you have officially joined the Greek community.

1) Date parties: The best parties you’ll get to attend in college because, finally, all of your best friends will be in one place! You, along with all of your new sisters, will flock to an awesome venue in Nashville accompanied by that special someone you’ve been eyeing in Bio lab. Yes ladies, it’s now your turn! The tradition of “guys ask girls” that embodied your high school days is now over! Get excited!

2) Chapter: Weekly meetings with your entire sorority where you will be fed yummy food and go over upcoming events and opportunities.

3) The House: Probably the best part. You now have the freedom to roam your sorority’s house, ie. chill out on the comfy couches and use the beautiful kitchen. You’ll finally have a true “home away from home.”

4) Big/Little: Whether you’re an only child or one of four, every girl could use a big sister to help her through college. Big/little is one of the most fun parts of being a new member- expect tons of food, awkward serenades, and sorority apparel that will completely change your wardrobe (for the better, of course).

5) “[Insert sorority here] ♥’s our ‘Dores” stickers: Most importantly, you are now allowed to wear the coveted stickers you saw upperclassman girls flaunting at tailgating events. The Rites of Spring tailgates could not come soon enough.

Vanderbilt

Stacey Oswald, originally from South Florida, came to Vanderbilt as a member of the class of 2015 and got involved with HerCampus her freshman year. She became assistant editor that year and is now the Campus Correspondent for Vanderbilt HC as a sophomore. Stacey is currently a columnist for Ask Miss A- Nashville and the life section of The Hustler. She's also very involved in her sorority, Kappa Delta, as well as Invisible Children. Outside of school and her extracurriculars, Stacey finds happiness in many sources, the most crucial being exercise and the sun. She loves to attend exercise classes and is an avid runner; she recently completed the Country Music Half Marathon. She also loves Vitamin D, especially when on the beach- though of course, she only soaks up the sun after applying SPF. A few of the things Stacey couldn't live without? Good food (especially from Sweet Cece's, Bricktops, and Samurai Sushi), great books (The Hypnotist's Love Story is a recent favorite), her family back in Florida, her wonderful boyfriend, and all of the great friends she's made at Vanderbilt.
