6 On a Budget Spring Break Adventures for the Virginia College Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Spring break is the time for fun, friends and adventure. Sadly, spring break can often be expensive as well. So, if you are on a college student budget and don’t have the money to pay for plane tickets or a beach house, these are some Virginia adventures you can enjoy without going broke.

1)      Washington D.C. day trip

Road trip or take a bus or train up to Washington D.C. and enjoy all the city has to offer. From the beautiful cherry blossom trees to the free museums, this trip will not break the bank.

2)      Hiking

Virginia has amazing scenery all over the state. Take a group of friends and have a picnic in the great outdoors. Head to Crab Tree Falls, McAfee Knob or any of the many other trails Virginia has to offer and get some fresh air.

3)      Camping

Take advantage of the spring weather and spend a few days and nights around a campfire. All you need for this adventure is a tent, good friends, and ingredients for s’mores (obviously).

4)      Get Cultured

Virginia is full of historical landmarks and museums. Go to Richmond and visit the VMFA and the Poe Museum or go to the Blackfriar’s Theatre in Staunton or visit historical Williamsburg (also a great place for a shopping spree).

5)      Get Spooky

Visit the many old, abandoned areas Virginia has to offer like the abandoned asylum in Staunton.

6)      Beach Weekend

Split a hotel room with some friends for a night and have fun in the sun on Virginia Beach’s Atlantic Avenue so you can come back to school with a little bit of a tan.

You don’t have to have money to have fun on spring break. All you really need is good friends and an open mind.

Katie, a Senior at VCU, is majoring in International Studies focused in European studies and is minoring in both Spanish and Writing. She credits all success and sanity to dry shampoo, The Arctic Monkeys, and chocolate. Her favorite things include argumentative essays, pitbull puppies (or really any puppy), and spring. Katie hopes to one day get paid to travel the world and write.
