Before attending VCU and officially calling RVA my home, I periodically came here to go to concerts. I was eager to finally live in such musically rich city but little did I know there was much more awaiting me than I thought. I go to concerts and house shows much more often than I did before and I’ve met some cool people, found great new music, and have developed a greater appreciation not just for music in general but specifically for the music that Richmond has to offer.
Â
1. The VenuesÂ
All of the main venues for local shows are in convenient locations. Strange Matter, The Camel, and Gallery 5 are all within walking distance from campus and are constantly featuring new artists and bands. Living in Richmond also means that we’re close to The National which is a great venue to see more popular names.
Â
2. The Diversity
You can find almost any genre of music within the Richmond music scene. There’s something out here for everyone which is part of what makes Richmond such an eclectic city and its music scene reflects that.
Â
3. The Inspiration
This city itself holds so much character and charm that it’s hard to not get inspired just by walking through the streets. The music scene plays a huge role in the city’s identity and adds to the inspiring nature of RVA.
Â
4. It’s Growing
Richmond has been named one of the fastest growing cities for music in the U.S. Local bands are constantly emerging and getting their names out there and part of that is because of the opportunities that exist within Richmond for local bands. “Citrus City Records” is a label based out of RVA that has signed bands from Richmond and other parts of the country and is giving bands a platform to share their music. You can check out some of the bands they represent here: https://citruscityrecords.bandcamp.com
Â
5. The Bands and Artists
The music scene is made up of emerging bands and artists who are putting out quality music and putting on great shows. If you haven’t been to a local RVA show yet I highly recommend it. Find bands that sound like they fit your taste and go check them out. Support your local bands!
Â
6. There’s Always Something Happening
If you’re ever bored with no plans one night, check out the local venues and see if there’s a show. Venues are constantly putting on fliers for upcoming shows, just look on any street lamp or street sign and one is sure to be posted. It’s an opportunity to get exposed to new music and meet new people.
Â
7. Tickets are Cheap
Sometimes, they’re even free. The Richmond music scene has provided us with nearby entertainment that won’t break our banks and as college students, what more could we ask for?
Â
8. House Shows
House shows are intimate and allow you to meet tons of new people while listening to some good music. Yes, these places can get pretty hot and crowded but it’s all part of the experience.Â
