Fall is here. That is made obvious by the sudden appearance of brown and red leaves and the slight breeze accompanying VCU students to their morning classes. Fall is an especially exciting time for me because I get to watch all those movies and TV shows that are reserved to be enjoyed during this season. I’ve included those TV shows and movies that exude the perfect fall vibes and deserve to be watched while cuddled under a mountain of blankets. From romance to fantasy, there’s a show for everyone.

Harlan Coben’s Shelter

Despite the first episode being released in August, Harlan Coben’s Shelter is a new Amazon Prime show worth watching this season. It follows the main character, Mickey Bolitar, as he uncovers the truth behind his father’s death and starts uncovering some dark secrets in his father’s hometown.

I found this show to be a breath of fresh air. It’s got a lovable group of friends at the forefront, a plot that is mysterious and exciting and a cast of characters that are diverse.

Shadow and Bone

This is another show that I will never stop recommending to my friends. The hit Netflix series, Shadow and Bone, is based on the books written by Leigh Bardugo. Obviously, I’ve read all of them.

The plot follows Alina Starkov who discovers that she is a Sun Summoner, the first in centuries. Her powers have the potential to extinguish the darkness that haunts Ravka while also battling new foes and enemies from either side. In addition, the show incorporates the second series in the Grishaverse, Six of Crows, which follows six young criminals as they pull off the ultimate heist.

I love all the casting choices that were made to bring the characters to life. This entire series is an easy one to follow and understand even if you haven’t read the books. This one is for all the found family trope lovers.

Yellowjackets

Now, we have to switch gears and talk about cannibalism.

Yellowjackets follows a group of teenage girls who get stranded in the woods after their plane crashes. The show jumps between the two timelines: during the time the girls are stranded for two years in 1996, to 2022 which shows their future counterparts. And yes, unfortunately, there is cannibalism. Along with other slightly gory scenes.

I love this show. I think the show does a great job of showing how each and every one of the girls is not innocent but at the same time, they all deserve better. It shows how their trauma has affected them in their own, unique way. If you’re into a more thriller and supernatural vibe during the fall, this one may be for you.

The Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor

The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor are two shows set in different universes but touch on the supernatural. By the end of both, I was crying my eyes out so I use that as an indicator of a show worthy of watching.

The Haunting of Hill House follows a group of siblings who come together to mourn the death of their sister Nellie and realize how it all traces back to their childhood home where their mother died. Similarly, The Haunting of Bly Manor follows au pair Dani as she looks after two siblings Flora and Miles, and uncovers the dark secrets surrounding their manor.

Both shows are truly ones that stay with you forever.

The Age of Adaline

Fall is also the perfect season for new romances. The Age of Adaline is a story following a young woman named Adaline who falls in love with philanthropist Ellis. But there’s one secret that haunts Adaline from fully committing to Ellis: she is cursed to live forever.

I love the plot twist in the middle of the movie. It gets me every time. I also love Blake Lively, so that’s a bonus.

One Tree Hill

Now, I have to include this show on the list. I feel like it barely gets the attention it deserves as being one of the iconic teen shows from the early 200s. One Tree Hill is set in the fictional town of Tree Hill that centers on two half-brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott and their enduring rivalry between each other.

I love this show so much. Shows that are set in fictional towns that follow a group of friends throughout high school and that end up all dating each other at one point is my weakness. This show is no different.
