For most young adults, college is the first time they can exert their
independence and do as they please without worrying about their parents looking over their shoulders. Parties, socializing with new and old friends, and late night cram sessions at the library are just a few rights of passage that many students partake in. With VCU in the heart of Richmond, the city’s crazy nightlife just makes it all the more tempting to stay out late. Staying out late can be dangerous though. College is a very important part of one’s life and should be enjoyed to the fullest, but in the process, it is critical that students remember their safety too. Â
In Richmond, safety is a big issue; you never know who is  lurking in the shadows, or waiting around the corner. Muggings, robberies, and shootings are a very serious reality for those living in an urban environment, and all have happened right here on and near campus.  No one is invincible or the exception to the rule when it comes to not being harmed.
Her Campus VCU hopes to spread the message about campus safety. To help our readers, we have listed a few tips on how to remain safe while still enjoying your college experience:
Â
1.     Use the Buddy Rule:  When you go out (especially at night or early in the morning) make sure that you have at least one person with you. People are less likely to try to harm you when they are outnumbered. Besides, isn’t going out with friends more fun then by yourself?
2.     Take a self-defense or martial arts class: These classes are fun, educational, and a work-out. Learning how to defend yourself and getting in shape while having a fun time with your friends sound like a good ideas to me!Â
3.     Take advantage of the escort service: When it’s late and you’ve got that feeling in your gut that something isn’t right, don’t be afraid to call the Campus Police. They are more than happy to take you home from wherever you are located. They know that safety is important and don’t want you to get hurt.Â
You can either use one of the yellow call boxes with the flashing light or call them at 804-828-1234.
4.     Carry pepper spray*: It is relatively inexpensive, easy to carry and use, and effective. Just slip a small can into your purse or clutch before you leave and you will feel safer and more confident.Â
5.     Exude confidence:  Walk around with your head up, shoulders back, and that attitude that you are one tough cookie and no one should mess with you. People are more likely to go after the weak cub than the mama bear.
6.     Use common sense: This may seem like a no brainer, but it is very important!  Don’t go to clubs or restaurants in a seedy neighborhood; don’t walk down dark alleyways; don’t stay out till all hours of the night; don’t take a leisurely midnight stroll; don’t leave a club with a guy you just met alone; and drink responsibly. Don’t get to the point of intoxication that you don’t know where you are or will be unable to defend yourself if the need arises.
Â
*Disclaimer- Always be responsible when using pepper spray. It is considered a weapon and should not be played with or used carelessly. Dorms and school property may have different rules about carrying pepper spray.
