A Few of VCU’s Most Interesting and Unique Courses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Sometimes classes appear mundane or unbearable to attend.
Unfortunately that’s a reality of college — loads of reading, hard exams and boring lectures. Thankfully VCU has a few interesting classes to spice up our course catalogue. If you ever wonder what classes VCU offers outside of your major or are looking for a fun elective to fill up credits, then here are a list of unique classes at VCU you might not of heard of!

1.     MASC 201- Curiousness:
The main focus of this class is to get students to be — you guessed it — curious!  It is a unique class with fun, crazy professors.  MASC 201- Curiousness is focussed on creativity. The mission of the class is to encourage students to think outside of the box and to be as creative as possible.  If you are searching for an outlet to explore your mind, then Curiousness is the class for you!

2.     UNIV 211- Food for Thought:
A class about food? Sign me up!  This class looks at how food is involved in many aspects of life and study.  Topics include sociology, anthropology, philosophy, art, literature, history, political science, psychology, economics, and religious studies.

3.     DANC 105/126/141/171- Improvisation, Afro-Caribbean Dance, Ballroom Dancing, T’ai Chi:
Dance classes are a great way to relax or let loose from the stress of every day life and tough classes.  Not to mention, any form of exercise is prescious! While most of the classes offered are strictly for dance majors only, these are available for anyone.

4.     RELS 362- Shakespeare and Religion:
Interested in religious studies or British literature?  This class should suit you just fine.  This class looks at different aspects of religion brought up in Shakespeare’s plays such as the nature of God, moral authority, immortality, and the meaning of life.

5.     AMST 195-Richmond:
This class may not be as unique as Curiousness or Food for Thought, but if you enjoy history or want to learn more about the interesting city where VCU is located, you should take this class.  It covers literary and historical events from Richmond’s beginning until now.
