Finding Happiness in Coming Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

For those who love it, travel can be addicting. Seeing the world is exciting and fun and can be luxurious or full of adventure.  But sadly, it can’t last forever; eventually the traveler must go home. It is difficult to not have feelings of boredom, sadness, and even resentment when coming home after such a wonderful time. But there are ways to avoid this post-journey slump.

1)      Rest

Give yourself a day or two to catch up on sleep before getting back to the “real world.” Enjoy being able to sleep in your own bed and relax the jet lag away.

2)      Journal

Take a quiet moment to refresh yourself on what happened during the blur of travel. It will help you when everyone starts asking how your trip was and maybe it will help you to not have to tell the same story 50 times in a row. It will also give you a moment to be sad it’s over before you focus on being happy it happened.

3)      Be Grateful

Find some perspective and be happy for the time you were able to travel and for the things you were able to experience. And find thankfulness for the home you have to return to.

4)      Seek Adventure

You don’t need a plane ticket to live life to the fullest. Make a bucket list of cool things in your area that you and your friends can do. Or just grab the people you love and take a Saturday to find an adventure.

It is easy to be discontent with what we have. It is easy to resent everyday life. But when you find happiness in the little things, everyday can be an adventure. Coming home doesn’t have to be the end of the journey.
