Her Campus Interviews, FACT’s 2011-2012 President, Sharmaine Placides

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Q1. What does FACT stand for and what is your mission?
FACT stands for Filipino Americans Coming Together. Our Mission Statement is,
“The mission of Filipino Americans Coming Together is to serve the Virginia Commonwealth and Richmond by advocating on behalf of the Filipino American community through social, political, cultural and educational actions.”

Q2. How prepared are you as president?
The road a president takes is very unexpected and challenging, but I can definitely say I am ready for anything that comes my way and looking forward to take on what it takes to be a successful leader and an example to my e-board, council, and members. I do not take the title President lightly, and I only hope I can live up to the name with the help of my wolf pack and the support from the general body.

Q3. What new things are you looking forward to bringing to FACT?
CULTURE! It’s not necessarily new, but something I really want to bring back within FACT. To educate others the best we can about what being Filipino is all about. Being very proactive within the University and the Richmond community all while having a good time. I am Filipino every day; I want members to know what it is like to be Filipino and why me and many others are so proud to be this apart of this culture. FUN+CULTURE+LEARNING=AN AWESOME TIME!

Q4. What do you think your biggest struggle will be?
I would say my biggest struggle would the fear that I won’t live up to FACTs name. FACT is known to be one of the best cultural organizations at VCU and I just want to try my best keep this legacy alive with the intended purposes of the founders. I want to do my best, and I’m doing all I can to takes steps closer to all the goals the e-board and I have set up for FACT.

Q5. As a woman leader, what do you plan to do after you graduate?
I want to go to graduate school. I want to go for counseling and social work. I want to start off as a high school guidance counselor and then get into social work, working with under-privlaged and abused children.

Q6. Where can one get more information about upcoming events and meetings?

EVERYWHERE!

When I approached Sharmaine Placides for an interview, she was already a friend of mine from becoming involved in FACT years ago. After interviewing Sharmaine Placides as president, I quickly learned how dedicated she is at one of VCU’s largest culture organization. She transitioned well from being a friend and acting silly, to being serious and focused. Placides’ positive attitude, strong mind, and radiating energy are some of the great examples of what young women leaders should possess.
