Millennials are known as the “selfie generation.” We are criticized for living our lives through a phone screen instead of living and experiencing life in the moment. And in many ways, it is a true accusation. Millennials are glued to their screens; constantly creating “the ideal life” on social media instead of forming real connections and having real experiences. Â
However, while excessive use of social media is detrimental (and honestly really annoying), there are definitely moments where using phones and social media can actually be living in the moment or creating experiences.
1) Keeping up with people
This is one of the main reasons most social media sites are created: to keep people connected. Seeing your occasional life updates may be the only way, or at least the easiest way for your distant family members or old friends to keep up with you and vice versa. And now with additions like Facebook’s video calls, that kind of communication is even easier and more personal.
2) Photos
In my opinion, capturing a picture is living in the moment. Framing a shot allows you to express your artistic creativity and appreciate and share the beauty of what you’re seeing with others. Capturing pictures and videos is not a new concept exclusive to social media. However, a selfie is not ideal. Why would you take a picture of just you when you are with friends or hiking with beautiful views or standing in front of the Eiffel tower?
3) Memories
Another perk of taking pictures are the memories that go along with looking at them later. Of course, people should be expected to make and remember memories without having pictures but they can certainly help. I love when certain pictures show up in my Facebook memories and remind me of an experience I had three years ago and would otherwise have not thought about.
4) Doing it for the Instagram
There is a phrase “do it for the Instagram” or “do it for the Vine” (RIP Vine) that is used to encourage someone to do something so they will have a cool post for Instagram or whatever media they are using. Usually, this is seen as a negative thing because people are only doing things for likes or a good post. But on the flip side, at least they are doing something! If a great picture or cool video is what motivates you to swim with sharks or say hi to a celebrity or just do something you may not do normally, then awesome! Of course, no one’s entire life should be controlled by whether or not they will post it on social media or whether it will get any likes but at least that person is creating experiences for themselves.
Social media has its pros and cons. And while I would certainly prefer that the people I am with stay off their phones and living life with me, there are moments like these mentioned that I am happy to be a part of the selfie generation. Life is all about balance.Â
