Living in Richmond as Told by Nick Miller

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Richmond is a unique city. Sure, it may not be as famous or exciting as New York City, but Richmond has its own vibe and for that, we love it. There are certain aspects of the city that all inhabitants know to be true and who better to explain life in quirky Richmond than Nick Miller from New Girl?

1)      The sidewalks

Any list involving Richmond life is incomplete without mention of the sidewalks. We get it, the brick is aesthetic and has a historical vibe… that is until every two are missing or they become uneven. However few things are more satisfying than watching newbies trip over the same pothole.

2)      The music scene

Richmond has about the same number of concert venues as it does pizza joints. At least that’s what it feels like. Whether you want to see a big name at The National or enjoy a local group at Strange Matter, Richmond has it all.

3)      The food

Speaking of pizza joints, walk a block in any direction and you will find a place to eat. This makes Richmond the perfect place to be a foodie, seek drunk food or find a hangover cure. Whether you are a vegan, a meat lover or just plain hungry, there is a place for you. Not only is there plenty of food, it’s almost always delicious.

4)      PLAID

Home to hipster, grunge, artsy and outdoorsy people of all ages, you cannot go a block without seeing someone in plaid. And that is assuming you yourself are not also rocking the look. Bonus points if the plaid is paired with a beard or a blonde, blunt cut bob.

5)      The indecisive weather

This may not be exclusive the Richmond as most of Virginia experiences this, but weather here is just weird. A sunny warm day can turn into freezing rain in an instant. Richmond inhabitants can never really switch out their winter and summer wardrobes.

6)     The nightlife

Whether you want to hit a bar, dance the night away or listen to live music, there is always something to do after dark. And there is, of course, always somewhere to eat late at night so you can re-fuel.

7)      The art scene

Known for its beautiful and interesting murals, Richmond is a hub for all arts. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, VCU’s art program, and the many murals are just a few examples of how important art is to the city. And, of course, you can’t miss the art kids struggling to carry some strange art piece.
