Dear Mom,
This Mother’s Day, I want to give you something more than yellow daises and a lavender scented candle – something that isn’t materialistic or doomed with a short shelf life. I want to give you a letter expressing how much I appreciate YOU and everything you do for me.
From the day you knew you were expecting, I have been your number one priority. You’ve cared for me, nurtured me and watched me grow. You have been my panicked phone call when I don’t know which medicine to take and my last text to say, “Goodnight. I love you,” before bed. Thank you for always providing me with home cooked meals and doing my laundry without reluctance when I’m just too lazy to do it myself.
I remember summer days sitting by the pool with you. Whenever you got in the water to cool off, I always wanted to get in with you. Despite trying to relax, you without hesitation floated in lazy circles with me wrapped around your waist and laughed about silly jokes. Little instances like this one made my childhood all the better.
Mom, you have been my biggest cheerleader from the earliest day I can remember. You never missed a softball game, swim meet, awards ceremony, inauguration or recital. Your encouragement and support motivated me to be better than even I expected of myself.
Thank you for being my rock and shoulder to lean on in good times and in bad. I have always been able to count on you through my darkest days. You are also my first call when I have good news or a reason to celebrate. I appreciate you for being the selfless and caring person you are. Without you, my life would be significantly lonelier. You’re not just my mom, you’re also my best friend. I’m lucky enough to have you as both! There’s no one I’d rather have by my side since day one.
When I was younger, “You’re just like your mom,” came off wrong. The angsty teen I was couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to compare me to my mother! Now, I love reminding people of you because I know that it means I must be a caring, motivated and strong woman. You are everything I hope to be. Luckily, I was raised by you!
For Mother’s Day, I hope this letter allowed you to see how great of a mom you’ve been for the past 21 years. You deserve all of the chocolate cake in the world and much, much more.
I love you.
Sincerely,
Your daughter
