As a child of the internet, I grew up with Troye Sivan. Troye Sivan is an Australian singer, songwriter, actor and former YouTuber. Sivan began his career on YouTube in 2007 at the young age of 12. He grew in popularity over time, especially once he became friends with popular influencers, including Tyler Oakley. Sivan’s content primarily focused on lifestyle and singing. Once Sivan came out as gay in 2013 via YouTube, this truly put him on the map. During this time, many people in the LGBTQ+ community were coming out to the internet, and Sivan played a huge role in this movement. After coming out, Sivan became more open about his sexuality and would talk about it often in his YouTube videos. This helped him foster an accepting community for his fans and created a safe space to discuss sexual orientation.
Prior to YouTube, Sivan was a child actor. He had roles in the X-Men series and Spud, Spud 2 and Spud 3. Between acting and YouTube, Sivan massed thousands of fans on social media. In 2015, Sivan came out with his break-out EP, Blue Neighbourhood. This EP became extremely popular and led Sivan to be nominated for awards, primarily in Australia. The EP was primarily popular with my generation. I remember being a pre-teen and downloading his EP on iTunes!
In 2018, Sivan came out with his second album, Bloom. Once again, he was nominated for a few awards but did not win. This album was more of a ‘flop’ in comparison to his first. After coming out with this album, Sivan took a break from the spotlight. He was not active in the social media or music world. He has now told the world that during this time, he was in a rocky relationship and was dealing with mental health issues.
This year, Sivan has made his iconic comeback with the album Something to Give Each Other. In the album, he has had three hit singles, including Rush, Got Me Started and One of Your Girls. He has been nominated for and won a few awards on this album and single, Rush. Sivan has been nominated for the 2024 Grammys in the categories Best Pop Dance Recording and Best Music Video for his song Rush. This is the first time he has ever been nominated for the Grammys! This album has arguably been his best and most successful. He has gained many new followers and was even played by Timothee Chalamet in an SNL skit! The song Rush has now become a club classic, and the music videos for Rush and One of Your Girls have been watched thousands and thousands of times.
