Trend Report: Fall 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Villanova chapter.

As we leave warm weather and sunny days behind for falling leaves and dropping temperatures, the time comes to retire our cutoff shorts and sundresses in order to embrace the newest fall fashions.

Although there were hundreds of different collections showcased this spring, these five trends seemed to have garnered the most attention from top fashion magazines and blogs.

1. 90s Grunge

The first and most talked about trend this fall is the 90s punk and grunge revival seen on the runways of Versace, Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, and Chanel, to name a few. Plaid, fall’s favorite print, will be in high demand but has taken on a new twist. Think less Blair Waldorf and more Kurt Cobain. This trend wouldn’t be complete without the addition of embellishments like chains, spikes and plenty of studs. Urban Outfitters is a great, affordable store to hit up if you’re looking to incorporate some of this trend into your wardrobe.

2. Military

Next up on the list is military inspired pieces. Collections filled with cargo jackets, camo print and plenty of army green dominated the Michael Kors, Rachel Roy, Charlotte Ronson, Rebecca Minkoff and Prabal Gurung shows. The military trend has long been an essential staple for many fashionistas but it was updated this season with the addition of all-over camo print. Camo printed furs, jackets and jeans were seen in abundance on the runway and in ready-to-wear stores. A great way to wear this trend is to pair a bold pair of camo print jeans, like Gap’s camo front-zip always skinny jeans, with a simple chambray button down.

3. Baseball Caps

Most have written off the classic baseball cap as a way to cover up a bad hair day or show support for your favorite sports team, but this season, these classic hats received a trendy makeover. Runway shows by Hervé Léger, J.Crew and Jeremy Scott showcased the pairing of these accessories. With a wide array of prints, crocodile detailing and heavy embellishments, these sporty caps took a glamorous turn. Ranging from a $300 leopard print calf hair cap to a $40 colorblock wool variant, J.Crew has plenty of options for any budget.

4. Menswear

Keeping with the borrowed from the boys theme, the next trend is the use of traditional menswear fabrics like herringbone, houndstooth and pinstripe. Designers like Lanvin, Dries van Noten, Tommy Hilfiger and Dolce & Gabbana softened these masculine textiles by cutting them into feminine silhouettes, gracefully draping them and even adding feathers. A great way to rock this trend without feeling overwhelmed is to go simple with the addition of a classic checked blazer from Zara.

5. Oversized Coats

The final trend displayed on the runways for fall was oversized coats ranging from innocent pastels to deep earth tones. While Alexander Wang and Stella McCartney stuck to classic fall hues like charcoal grey, navy and black, CĂ©line and Louis Vuitton lightened things up with shades of lemon, peach and light blue. Although the colors differed, the silhouette stayed the same with each collection showcasing long, boxy designs with a distinctly masculine vibe. If any item is worth splurging on this season, this is it. An oversized coat in a classic shade and silhouette will be sure to get plenty of wear over the years.

Armed with this arsenal of new trends for fall, you’ll be sure to keep warm while also staying chic!Â
