In a picturesque campus located in one of the wealthiest areas in Philadelphia it is hard to imagine that there would ever be fear of an outside threat so close to home. Stories of violent acts against civilians too often appear on the news and in our lives. However, despite each tradgedy, it is diificult to accept that you personally might one day face the same danger. While Villanova University was never specifically mentioned as a target in the recent threat posting, the fear evoked from one individual’s decision to spread distress was a reality for many students and faculty this past Monday.
The hard truth is that we live in a world that is plauged by acts of violence and anger. While human nature towards shows of power and agression is not new or unexpected, the ever growing presence of social media has allowed many individuals to gain following, attention and even support for actions that are deadly and harmful to many. Whereas years ago wars were fought over land and resources, today our biggest threat is a physcological warfare composed of those who are willing to go beyond means of rationality to achieve their goals; which are often personal or deeply embedded in their beliefs. The solution to this era of uncertainty is not clear or even potentially possible to resolve. However, we can begin to chip away at this problem right within our own circle of reach.
While we cannot let fear of the unknown rule our lives, we can be aware of our surroundings. Many individuals stuggle with things that are not present or known. It is with great encouragement to always be kind to others and assist others in getting help if they demonstrate signs of internal struggles. Only good can come from doing good unto others. It is often those that feel isolated or victimized that feel they have the least to lose and have the biggest bone to pick with the world around them. One act of kindness could potentially change the life of one, or many others.
For every moment of fear that invades our lives, it is important to remember that there are ten-fold moments of joy and optimism. Though we cannot change the actions of others, we can change the actions of ourselves. Do not let one individual’s choice of bringing panic to many deter you from looking at the world at large with hope and happiness.
There is always a brighter day ahead.
