- Do It by Chloe x Halle
-
Since I found this song, it has been my go to. Chloe x Halle have amazing vocals as they sing this bop. It is a single from their album: Ungodly Hour. It’s a fun and catchy number that highlights one woman’s experience. A woman who would rather secure bags than date and loves partying with her homies and honestly, this is the anthem I needed.
My favorite lyric in the whole song is: “He say, “Where you from?” Tell ’em, “Outer space”. ’Cause a bag the only thing I’m tryna chase. I’m MIA.” This line is basically a guy flirting with her but he isn’t even on her LEVEL. She’s somewhere else, she’s so hard to get to she’s literally from Outer space. She’s on a whole other plane of existence and he isn’t even there yet. Then she says she doesn’t need a man and just wants to hustle and make money. This song is such an empowering song that has a catchy tune and will get you singing on the way to class, to an exam, or even in your shower. Trust me when I say, this song will always be played if I have the aux. Also, there is a remix to the song as well featuring Doja Cat, City Girls, and Mulatto. I love the remix as it adds more lyrics and layers to the song also the collaboration of voices work so well with meshing together. The remix doesn’t even feel like one, it feels like it should be given its own flowers. Both the original song and the remix are on my playlist, definitely recommending listening to both and see which one you vibe with.
- Bad Texter by Ryan Woods
-
When I first heard this song, I swore up and down I was listening to Conan Gray but wasn’t. I was listening to another artist. This was by Ryan Woods and it was his debut, oh my gosh. It was literally so fantastic and I am so lost as to why I am not hearing any hype about this song.
The song goes into miscommunication and basically he keeps overthinking their relationship because of it. As someone who has been on dating apps before, whenever the guys were ‘dry’ over text I had never thought maybe they didn’t know how to speak to me. I just assumed they were not interested but this song dives into the fact that the man on the end is interested; he just doesn’t know how to communicate and is emotionally exhausted to fix it. My favorite lyric in the song is: “And I’m so sorry I don’t think of you. I know I broke your heart in two. I can’t trust myself.” and this line highlights he knows there’s a problem when he isn’t texting her but he feels like he’s making things worse by texting her so he is pulling himself away from it. This song honestly can have a few interpretations (this interpretation may be 100 percent wrong but it’s my thoughts). Modern day dating is very hard especially when technology is in play. I know from experience a lot of miscommunication I have had has come from not being able to read the other or communicate clearly over text. Through text you can’t sense tone or humor so you are reliant on the words and if the words can be misinterpreted well….then that’s where fights happen. I really think this song is underrated but I absolutely love it to death.
- We Dont Talk Anymore by Charlie Puth ft. Selena Gomez
-
This song is one that many probably know but I think we as a society moved on from this song way too soon. The vocals of Charlie and Selena make this song. Oddly never saw them as a duo in a song but for some reason, they fit with this. The song is two different points of views about why these exes don’t talk to each other anymore.
My favorite lyric in the song is: “Should’ve known your love was a game. Now I can’t get you out of my brain. Oh, it’s such a shame.” I love this lyric because both of them say it in their respective parts. It shows two sides of the story but they both can’t get rid of the other out of their head. Both of the individuals in the song are still stuck wondering about this past relationship. He believes she moved on fast to another while she is still debating re-entering the relationship but at the end of the song they seem to be a bit bitter about this end. The chorus being ‘we don’t talk anymore’ sounds like they are trying to remind us that they don’t talk. It’s as if they have to keep reminding themselves before they do something. I love songs that tell a story and especially songs that are nostalgic to me. It’s a song from 2016 and it definitely helps me remember the era of music that came from the 2010s. I don’t know is it just me or is pop music very very different now than it was in 2010s? I don’t dislike 2020s pop I just find it interesting how different it is, at least in my eyes. This song is definitely a vibe and one I love to sing in the shower with my comb being my microphone. - Ribs by Lorde
-
I found this song when I was in a dark place. I had just graduated High School and felt sick to my stomach about college. I was so worried about missing my friends and about changing who I was when I would go to college. I genuinely felt alone. All my friends were going to college in my city, some of them were not going to college and were just staying back in Virginia Beach but me? I was moving. I was worried about missing out and everything changing or me changing and everything being the same. This song I found when I genuinely needed it.
My favorite lyric in this song is: “This dream isn’t feeling sweet. We’re reeling through the midnight streets. And I’ve never felt more alone. It feels so scary, getting old.” This line really resonated with me because it was relatable and the feelings were there. This song I love to belt to when I am upset. Oddly enough I am the type of person when I am sad, I like to listen to sad music. It makes me feel more grounded knowing someone feels similar to how I feel. This song is sad but lovely as it is what I needed to hear. Also Lorde is underrated and she has some pretty good music. This song though has to be my favorite from her. This is the type of music you listen to when you’re homesick and then you call your friends and ask how they are and reminisce.
- Potions by Day Wave
-
The song has the best guitar in the background. This song I had actually found through Spotify shuffle and it talks about falling for someone even if they are not necessarily the best person for you. You can’t resist them and their ‘potion’ keeps intoxicating them so that you can’t leave. The song itself is hypnotizing with its lyrics and beat. I feel like it would totally fit in with a coming of age film.
As someone who had been in a relationship where it felt like they kept drawing me back in, this song hit differently. But like in the song, that person may not be good for you. I have to sometimes remind myself that. This song is not just for relationships but also friendships in my opinion. This song I allowed the lyrics to take over and just went to focus on that. My favorite line is “Anyway I should be running away. But I don’t use my head and I just stay.” This implies the person singing knows that being with them is not the best situation. They know they should go but they aren’t using their head and rather using their heart. This causes them to stay and as someone who’s dealt with toxic relationships this is quite accurate. This song I play to go to class as the beat and catchy chorus echoes in my ears.
I have always been told I have a very mixed music taste but I tried my best to put you all onto some good music. Thanks for reading this article and hopefully you added one of these songs to your playlist.
