What is orange, maroon and seen all over on football game days? You got it: the game day bow. If you’ve been around campus at all during some of our finest showings of spirit, you surely have not missed them. Some are small, while others are overwhelmingly large. There are plain bows, patterned bows, bows that sparkle, bows with words and bows that might as well have more bows on them. Well, maybe that last one took it too far, but you get the point. If you’re at a Virginia Tech home football game, you are going to see a lot of girls wearing bows.
What is wrong with that? It’s just another way to rock our lovely school colors and show pride, though here’s my question: Would you wear a large, floppy bow in your hair on a Tuesday afternoon to your biology lecture? My guess is that the majority of game day bow wearers would say no. Why is it acceptable to wear a bow in your hair on a game day only? Why don’t girls color coordinate their outfits to bows on a daily basis? I realize there are a few select who do, but more than not would turn their heads to the idea.
By all means, please wear your bows with pride come to our next home football game. In fact, someone should create a competition for the biggest, most bad bows of them all. I solely ask as you are superficially complementing every girl at the tailgate claiming her bow is “the cutest I’ve ever seen,” that you think about what you are doing. Are you conforming to the ways of the masses or do you truly find the idea of ribbon atop your head attractive? Take a look in the mirror and decide for yourself.
