Dyrell Roberts, a wide receiver on the Virginia Tech football team, had to overcome a season ending in injury this past year. Luckily for Hokie fans, not only has it made him a better player, it also means he will be back for the 2012 season as both an experienced playmaker and a veteran leader. I was able to sit down with him and discuss his injury, his fans, and his expectations for next season.
Ā
Her Campus Virginia Tech: What was your first thought when you got hurt and learned that you were out for the season?
Dyrell Roberts: I thought, āman I got hurt again, is this really happening to me and is my career over?ā But it didnāt take long to realize that all this was happening because this is what God wanted all along and in the end it would only better both my draft stock and help me both on and off the field.
Ā
HCVT: What have you been doing to get back into shape and be ready for spring football?
DR: Iāve been working out with my teammates and doing a lot of extra running and throwing with my quarterback, Logan, to get our timing back down on routes. Iām really just staying super busy to get my body used to going full speed all the time so that the season wonāt be a problem.
Ā
HCVT: How would you describe yourself as a player?
DR: Iām a player that doesnāt like to fail or lose. Iām never satisfied, no matter how well I play on a given day. Iām always looking for ways to better my game because I know at the end of the day there is always something I could be getting better at. I feel like if Iām not working thereās always somebody trying to take my spot and I canāt let that happen.
Ā
HCVT: How would you describe yourself as a person?
DR: Funny and laid back type of guy that just likes to have fun and enjoy life because it is too short.
Ā
HCVT: Whatās your favorite part about playing football?
DR: I like playing with my teammates, playing in front of a lot of people and winning!Ā I enjoy scoring touchdowns, making plays, having fun doing what I love and using my talents that God has given me to better myself.
Ā
HCVT: Are you close with your teammates? Describe your relationship with them.
DR: Yes, I am super close with my teammates; our relationship is pretty much like brothers. Some of us are closer to one another than others but thatās just because we all have different cliques, if thatās what you want to call it. But we all are family and have each otherās back through whatever.
Ā
HCVT: What are you looking forward to the most about next season?
DR: Getting back out there with my teammates and doing what I love again, along with playing in Lane stadium for another season in front of the best people in the world. I wouldnāt have it any other way!
Ā
HCVT: What are your career goals?
DR: After next season I want to enter the draft and play in the NFL for however long God sees fit. Then I want to work with children while coaching football somewhere.
Ā
HCVT: What do your fans and Virginia Tech fans mean to you?
DR: My fans here at VT mean the world to me; I love each and every one of them with all of my heart because over the past few years they have stuck with me through the good, the bad and theyāre still here with me today. Hokie Nation is the best group of fans in the world as far as Iām concerned.
Ā
HCVT: What can Hokie fans expect from you next season?
DR: They can expect a lot of big plays, a lot of winning, and just a good all-around experience once my teammates and I hit the field to play our opponents. Basically just good old Hokie football!
Ā
HCVT: What are your expectations for the team next season?
DR: My expectations this year as an individual and team is to get as close to perfection as possible because we know if we reach that Ā everything else will take care of itself, including a national championship.
