When you see Erick Green on the basketball court, he is an electrifying player; a game changer. But when you see Erick Green around campus he is just a funny, quiet guy who considers himself a regular student at Virginia Tech. Little does Erick know, he has the support of the Hokie Nation, especially on nights when the men’s basketball team plays in Cassell Coliseum. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Erick Green, this week’s campus celebrity.
Â
Her Campus Virginia Tech:What is your favorite part about being a student athlete at Virginia Tech?
Erick Green: My favorite parts are the nice facilities we get to play and practice in, the nice places we get to stay when traveling, and meeting new people. I love meeting new people and being able to talk to them.
Â
HCVT: What would you say is the most difficult part about being a student athlete?
EG: Definitely managing my time. With school, basketball, studying, and a social life it gets really hard to balance.
Â
HCVT: Do people recognize you around campus? Do they talk to you?
EG: In my eyes, I don’t feel like people notice me; I’m just a normal person. People will say hi to me, but I don’t feel any different than other students here.
Â
HCVT:How many followers do you have on twitter right now?
EG: Almost 1,800.
Â
HCVT: Of those followers, how many would you say you don’t know?
EG:I don’t know the majority of them, but I definitely appreciate all of my followers.
HCVT: How would you describe yourself as a person? Do you like having the spotlight and attention?
EG: I would say I’m very laid back, funny, very quiet, and I keep to myself a lot. I’m very friendly; if you talk to me I’ll definitely have a conversation with you.I don’t like attention; I feel like basketball is a team sport and everybody should get recognized not just one person.
Â
Â
HCVT: What’s your favorite part about playing basketball?
EG: Getting to play against the best competition because I’m very competitive. I also love traveling and experiencing new places.
Â
HCVT: Are you close with your teammates? Describe your relationship with your teammates?
EG: Yes I’m very close with all my teammates; we love to have a good time together. There are three guys on the team that I’m always with Tyrone Garland, Cadarian Raines, and Jarrell Eddie.
Â
HCVT:Â Being a junior, you are now one of the leaders of the team, what is that like?
EG: It’s challenging because now I have to lead and make sure everybody does the right thing and is in on the same page. If someone messes up I feel like it’s my fault because I am the leader.
Â
HCVT: How would you describe yourself as a player? What are some of your assets and what are you working to improve upon?
EG: As a player I describe myself as a leader. I make sure everything is going right. I’d say I’m a playmaker. The biggest thing I’m working on is my 3-point shooting.
Â
HCVT: What do your fans and Virginia Tech fans mean to you and the team?
EG: We love our fans, we love the Hokie Nation. We always want Cassell to be packed because when it is, we feel like we can beat anybody. Our fans mean everything to us.
Â
HCVT: And finally, what are your expectations for the team this year?
EG: Our expectations are very high and we expect to go to the tournament this year.
