Healthy On-Campus Lunches

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

The clock has struck 12:05 and you’re done with class for now, but all you can think about is the grumbling in your stomach.  You want something tasty but not high in calories, after all, summer will be here in a few short weeks!  Although it can be difficult to find healthy meals in the dining halls at Tech, after some detective work I’ve found a few picks that will leave you satisfied for just less than 500 calories.

1. Warm Chicken Tender Salad from West End:  Don’t frown because I said the dreaded “S” word.  Enjoy a nutritious meal with chicken, tomatoes, cucumbers, red peppers, and the most delightful combination of honey roasted nuts and dried cranberries, all for well under 500 calories.  Skip the fried chicken and ask for grilled with the dressing on the side and save yourself about 250 calories (AKA 25 minutes on the elliptical).

2. Half a Turkey and Swiss Sandwich with a Small Tomato Soup:  Create your own half a sandwich using the handy menu papers and fill up a small cup of soup while you wait.  This flavorful meal will keep you full for your afternoon study session at Torg.

3. DX Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich: In a hurry to get to your next class? Stop into DX and grab a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to tide you over for only 345 calories.  And if that isn’t enough to fill you up, enjoy a cup of their fresh fruit or an apple all for under 50 calories. Heck – grab a few if you want to!

4. Chick-fil-a Chargrilled Wrap:  A multi-grain wrap filled with grilled chicken, lettuce, and cheese for just a little over 400 calories.  Not only satisfying, but quite tasty.

Keep these selections in mind next time you can’t decide what to order for lunch.  Remember to always get grilled instead of fried and keep sauces and dressings to a minimum!
