How to Make 2020 the Year of You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

With Thanksgiving behind us, we are finally in the homestretch to the end of 2019 and the start of a new decade. Behind us are our childhoods filled with watching episodes of Victorious and Hannah Montana, listening to Tik Tok by Ke$ha on repeat on our iPod Shuffles, and rocking Silly Bandz and Loom Bracelets. A lot happened in the past 10 years: we graduated from high school, went to college, and grew up in this decade. Times are changing, life is changing, and it can be hard to keep up with its fast-paced transitions. In order to make the most of this new decade and own the new year, here are some tips on how to start off 2020 right!

There’s a lot to come for you in the new year and while you might not know what it is yet, the opportunities are out there waiting for you to take them. In order to make the most of this year, take advantage of any new, exciting, and maybe even scary opportunities that come your way. The results will surprise you and you might discover something that becomes your new favorite thing. Try something scary or a little bit out of your comfort zone in this upcoming year, whether it be downloading that dating app you’ve been putting off or singing karaoke in front of a bunch of strangers; doing things that scare you is good for you and you never know where they might take you!

With the addition of the new and exciting things to your life, you need to ensure that you save time for the most important people in your life: your friends, family, and most importantly, yourself. Spending time with the people you care about most makes a person genuinely happy; whether it be a parent, sibling, best friend, or co-worker, laughing and having a good time with your favorite people is the best form of medicine. When you’re trying all of these exciting things in this new decade, don’t forget to save some time for the people who matter most in your life. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

All in all, the most important piece of advice I can offer to make 2020 your year is to follow your dreams. Even if you don’t know exactly what they are yet, they are out there waiting for you to find and pursue them, which is why you need to step outside your comfort zone to find what truly makes you happy. With the support from your family and friends — and of course, believing in yourself — you can accomplish anything. Instead of sitting on the sidelines and waiting for the next 10 years of your life to just pass by, step up and take control of it; own who you are and what you like. Knowing who you are is an important step in taking control of your life and once you’ve successfully done that, you can make 2020 the year of you!
