Her Campus Virginia Tech:Are you involved in any clubs?
John Mulheren:I am president of the VPI Cave Club. It’s definitely the most fun you can have at Tech… legally. I joined my freshman year (2008), and plan to stay with it until I can’t walk anymore. Becoming a member of the VPI Cave Club is probably one of my favorite memories. It involves a pretty rigorous training/testing routine so I was really proud when I finally got it.
If you’re ever bored here at Tech, you should definitely check it out.
HCVT: What do you plan to do after graduation?
JM:Uhhhh… Good question. Ideally find a job, start a family, retire in Costa Rica. The usual stuff.
HCVT: What do you like to do in your spare time?
JM:I spend a lot of my spare time underground in caves. I also like playing music with friends. Doing nothing at all is really underrated too.
HCVT: Have you participated in any internships?
JM:I interned at a travel insurance company called Mondial Assistance as a trainee actuary. I usually did work that the main team was too busy to do, lots of number crunching and data analysis. It was definitely an invaluable experience because I had no idea what a “real job” was like before this. It also helped me realize what I am and am not willing to do for the rest of my life.
HCVT: What is your favorite movie?
JM: I like Christopher Nolan movies like The Prestige and The Dark Knight. O Brother, Where Art Thou is amazing too. I have a secret spot in my heart for The Notebook, but don’t tell anyone OK?
HCVT:What’s your idea of a perfect date?
JM:Staying in on a cold, rainy day watching movies and drinking hot chocolate.
HCVT: What are your favorite books?
JM:House of Leaves is amazing. Harry Potter of course. Does Calvin and Hobbes count?
HCVT: Do you play an instrument?
JM:I’ve played guitar and drums in two different bands. But my true passion… is the ukulele.
HCVT: Where is your favorite place to eat in Blacksburg?
JM:Off campus, The Cellar.  I recommend their Pita Pizzas. On campus, West End.  The Asian Chicken Wrap is my favorite there.
HCVT: Do you have any pets?
JM:We’re not allowed to have pets in my apartment currently.  But I would love to adopt a cat at some point.
HCVT: If you could meet anyone that has ever existed, who would it be and why?
JM:I think it would be really cool to meet the Dalai Lama. He has so much to say on so many topics. And he’s pretty much right about all of them.
