Spicing Up Your Living Space

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

As the school year kicks off, many people are still putting the finishing touches on
their rooms. Whether it is on or off campus, there are many ways to spice up a dull
living space. Your room at school should be a home away from home and these tips
and trick will do just that.

Design with Deception
Many students are faced with cramped rooms that they might even have to share.
Here are a few suggestions to make it seem like your room is bigger.

• Mirrors: Adding more than one mirror can give dimension to a small room

and make it appear larger. Play with different shapes, sizes, and designs.
For example buy several small mirrors and arrange them in a pattern for a
modern feel. You can never look at yourself enough, right?
• Bed Risers: Never underestimate the utility of under the bed storage. Bed
risers increase the amount of space so you can store suitcases, winter
clothes, shoes, or anything else that wont fit in your closet

• Shoe Organizer: There is nothing for frustrating than frantically searching

for a matching pair of shoes, especially if you’re in rush. Shoe organizers can
solve this problem and give you more room space. There are several types of
organizers such as under the bed, hanging in the closet or over the door.
• Pillows: This is always a surprising one to most people but try it and see for
yourself. Move the bed so that it is horizontally flush with the wall. Place
pillows along the side of the bed instead of at the head. This has changed
your twin bed into a daybed, which provides seating during the daytime.
Now you don’t have to worry about chairs taking up extra space and friends
have a place to sit when visiting. Color coordinate your pillows to add
personal style.

Sensible Style
Everyone wants a stylish room but having the latest and greatest can be costly to
students. These inexpensive alternatives can make a big impact.
• Frames: Everyone has posters and picture on their walls but adding a funky
colored frame can really set you apart. Taped up posters scream poor college
kid and can diminish the look of a nicely decorated room. This small change
can make a big difference.

• Inexpensive Paintings: Stores such as TJ Maxx and Marshalls sell quality

inexpensive paintings. If you want an artistic touch in your dorm or
apartment choose this cost efficient way.
• School Spirit: As a Hokie, show off your school pride by adding maroon and
orange accessories such as lamps, bedspreads and/or dressers. Some stores
sell large wall stickers like the Hokie Bird, Hokie tracks, footballs and other
Virginia Tech images. If you don’t want to buy it new, buy used furniture and
spray paint it Virginia Tech colors. This saves money and you get to show
your artistic side.
