Valentine’s Day is here, and I am definitely a part of the population who really doesn’t care in the slightest bit. I know what you’re thinking– here’s another rant from a bitter, single person who doesn’t want Valentine’s Day to come around because she has no one to spend it with. As a matter of fact, I’ve always thought Valentine’s Day was annoying, even during years I’ve been in a relationship.Â
Valentine’s Day is all about sharing and expressing love with the people that you have in your life and showing your appreciation for them. I have nothing against that idea — in fact, my big issue with Valentine’s Day is that I believe people should appreciate the people they love in their life every time of the year, rather than just one particular February day.Â
The entire holiday is built on the profit of businesses and industries such as chocolate, jewelry, and restaurants. There’s no reason that you shouldn’t go out and get nice things for the people in your life that you care about, but you can do so at any time of the year. Entirely too much pressure has been put on the holiday itself. You don’t have to spend a ton of money, you don’t have to go all out to impress someone, and you certainly don’t need to craft an extravagant (and highly cheesy) gift that most people will judge you for purchasing and/or making.Â
So for this Valentine’s Day, don’t go out and buy some big giant teddy bear, a card bigger than half your body, or a tacky, ugly heart necklace if you don’t want to. Valentine’s Day (and frankly, every day that you are with someone) should be about expressing your love, and you should do that in whatever way in which you feel most comfortable.Â
With that being said, have a happy Valentine’s Day everyone, celebrating how YOU want to.Â
